1800 person conference
30% masked
99% vaxed

13% got covid; for over half of them, they'd managed to avoid it until then.

Makes me worry about a ~1800 person, ~1% masked, 100% vaxed conference I'm attending next month.

@arstechnica The people in the comment thread talking about being sick of masks are pretty disheartening. Nobody was hospitalized - that's great! But long COVID is a real effect too.

If you're sick of masks, find a more comfortable respirator for you. I'm sick of people getting disabled, possibly permanently. Wear an N95 indoors, especially in large gatherings, to protect others! #CovidIsNotOver

@arstechnica From an email from my city this week now that they're not tracking cases:

"The CDC continues to recommend that everyone get vaccinated, get the latest booster, use an at-home test if you’re exposed or have symptoms, stay home if you’re sick, and wear a mask when there are a lot of people sick with COVID."

Why are we not encouraging people to mask in high risk spaces SO THAT a lot of people don't get sick with COVID?

@arstechnica our county is "95% at least one dose", but less than ⅓ got the bivalent booster: https://mstdn.science/@TompkinsNYCOVID/110459238517110297

Getting a flu shot 2 years ago isn't going to help you much this coming winter...

Aside: the bot broke last week because the CDC stopped tracking vaccines 3 weeks ago, since federal funding got dropped.

Tompkins County COVID Numbers (@[email protected])

05/30/2023 7 active cases 3 new positive tests 5 new test results 27,175 total positive tests 3 currently hospitalized 104 deceased 32.4% bivalent boosted 61.3% vaxxed + boosted 84.1% fully vaccinated 95.0% partially vaccinated #ithaca

@arstechnica Jesus, what's next, Fort Knox was robbed because the security guards were sleeping?

Check your standards, CDC.

@arstechnica lol

I read this headline to my wife (along with the date/location, and the additional comment that 10% of attendees caught it), and she responded with "oh yeah, my friend got covid at that conference."

@arstechnica The battle between newer strains and our most recent vaccinations will be won by the newer strains, though severity should lessen. It's not over. I wear an N95 mask when I go out and foresee risk of being around other people. It would be best if everyone masked up, but sociopaths we pay handsomely to be our politicians made that impossible. We have a simmering stew of mutating COVID everywhere on the planet. "It ain't over 'til it's over" is my mantra, and it ain't over imho.

@arstechnica So another pop-competency test failed.

Why does CDC still have their job? Oh, it's political not science.
