starting to feel like 90% of painting miniatures is learning to thin paint appropriately for the task at hand
is this why everyone uses airbrushes xD

honestly i feel like a large part of my dissatisfaction with this is how shiny they are lol
and the one hard directional light is not helping xD
not sure that "ultra matt" varnish is gonna help either but i'll prolly do bases and varnish tomorrow
i bought more fallout minis because they were 20% off, no tax, and free usps shipping
what can i say i am scum lololol
they shipped this morning, and via usps! \o/
+1 for cmo games
i ordered more paint
like. white paint
i can't believe i didn't order white paint the first time lololol
also got a chance to get more of the paint i know imma use on the rest of my minis, and the ones in the mail
that fluorescent green is actually pretty baller
I'm not saying I'm done with these yet, but I am saying these are killing me lolololol
Lessons learned:
1) holy fuck light paint on dark paint is a nightmare,
2) I am very bad at two texture bases, and
3) the difference between intentional disorganized chaos that looks good, and accidental paint splatter, is probably skill and experience
a lot of the fallout warfare mini bases are quite nice and you can do stuff with them
and then the hounds are like a flat patch of dirt with a slightly raised paved road or something
part of the problem is also i primed it all black, and then while i highlighted the hounds more brightly, the undersides were quite dark, so then... i didn't want the bases also dark
the point is i suck at this and don't plan anything in advance lololol
i swear to god the fucking spine spikes on the deathclaw killed me
absolutely wrecked me
i wanted them to be bright fluorescent green
but every coat it looked great... until it dried. then it looked like dark shit
light on dark
over and over i put like a dozen coats of that fucking paint on and it did not improve
eventually used a bright yellow
same deal with the rim of the deathclaw base
that was black primed and fluorescent green will not do fucking shit on it
i layered yellow on it, then tried to layer the green
what is pictured is like 6 layers of green
it will not fucking work lololol
In an effort to murder me, dogmeat's right front paw is not touching the base
At all
can i leave it black? yes
will it look totally fine as black since his paw would shadow that area anyway? yes
will i leave it black? yes
will i personally be annoyed? oh yes xD
Tedious
Very tedious xD
💀💀💀
Honestly things are going too well
Might as well take a photo before I fuck it up xD
My detail brush's tip is fucked tho. The soap trick does not work
think imma stop for now
i put a cover over my HELLO KITTY wet palette loosely. need to figure out how covered that thing needs to be to last overnight tho >.>
assuming everything goes well tomorrow i wanna try washing these then drybrushing
hoping tomorrow is a productive day
if i finish dogmeat as well i'll have 4 more minis left from that 2 player set i bought
what the fuck man lol
wild shit

the colors are mostly for show. you can get a 2d printing of it in color, but not a painted 3d mini
also heroforge only seems to offer minis in 30mm scale
you can order the stl file and print it yourself or third party tho
yesterday: base coat perfection
today, after drying overnight: terrible. model showing underneath. pain too thin in splotches. must repaint like a third of the base coat
Touched up
Experimenting slightly with highlights and dry brushing before doing a wash which I will probably fuck up
alright washing in sections, with non-black colors, with the mini in different positions because gravity, etc sounds way too complicated lol
BLACK WASH. ALL AT ONCE
LOL YOLO
i bet stormtroopers are a motherfucker to paint
white armor
fuck off lololol
i will cast brainstorm all day idgaf
unban top
Hrm. I mean yeah the wash was weak but some darkening in folds and cracks did happen
This was like 2 washes
One of the mutants has an exposed back and I feel like mixing in a wild gray would make it look like a weird semi translucent vein thing going on
Or look terrible lolololol
Hmmm I dunno
Feel like the wash/shadows came out way wrong
Drybrushing kinda fun tho
I think the wash problem was that it was way too weak
Should be a lot stronger so it looks properly dark, and I just wipe it off the raised areas
I consider the drybrushing an absolute win
I need a lighter touch tho xD
I might be better shading with a brush than washing
But that's mostly because I dunno how to wash xD
Drybrushing is a lie
It works better with a mildly wet brush >.>
Yeah okay brush strokes need... Work
But it's better
Glad I went dark green as the base skin color now, this highlighting works
(I have two greens and no white .>.>)
Alright I can layer forever obv I think this is good enough
Planned to just do bases today... zero bases done lololol
also like now that i can see my photos in giant size on my desktop: these do in fact look better under normal lighting conditions with normal human eyes lololol
good god that contrast
@worthlessbums I'm enjoying seeing you get to grips with something new and creative.
I got back into painting a few years ago, and it has been nice to have something calm and slow that requires gentle concentration instead of my usual pastimes which are the opposite of all of that.
@Smingleigh yeah mostly i like that it's not hard on my hands at all
most of my hobbies... terrible for my hands xD
