Book challenges are fueled by parents' objections to LGBTQ themes - The Washington Post

Objection to sexual, LGBTQ content propels spike in book challenges
An analysis of book challenges from across the nation shows the majority were filed by just 11 people.

ELEVEN BIGOTS, FOLKS. JUST ELEVEN BIGOTS are trying to destroy public education across the USA. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/05/23/lgbtq-book-ban-challengers/

@cstross It’s a brilliant reminder that as an individual, you really can make a difference.

Fml.

@cstross That's because most bigots can't read and write? 😅
@cstross "The Kite Runner", FFS.
Oh, they'll ban me now for the second F.
@cstross If only there were consequences for those 11 bigots.
@cstross How do they have the energy to be so awful all the time? Isn't it exhausting? -.-

@cstross Reportedly, the vast majority of COVID misinformation can also be traced back to a similarly tiny band of assholes (no word on whether there's any overlap between the two groups, but I'd bet that they're not more than a degree or two of separation apart).

There may not be a single reason why we can't have nice things, but this tawdry little coven of Comstocks shows that the total count is often barely in double digits.

@angusm @cstross I agree there's only a small number of the actively malicious, but the reason they've got the devastating impact they do is because it catches and resonates with the "silent" supportive majority.
@larsmb @cstross Cancer begins with a single cell ...
@larsmb @angusm @cstross "Majority" (in the USA anyway) only if you count people in a way to account for gerrymandering. Without gerrymandering, many of the politicians pushing this would not have sufficient support to push the bills through.
@Retreival9096 @angusm @cstross The gerrymandering (in the US) persists because the people tolerate it.
I think we make too many excuses for the majority by attributing the outcomes to the malicious few. (I don't deny their existence, but they only have such impact because they are supported.)
@larsmb @Retreival9096 @angusm @cstross it’s more complicated than that because there is an opposition, and even though they are in the minority, the founding documents were written to empower this type of minority specifically to protect slavery. The majority is not large enough to overcome this (hopefully in the future it will be), and is not ready to forfeit “domestic tranquility” to pursue non-governmental change
@cstross Unfortunately the article says that some Moms for Liberty chapters are filing all their complaints under one name to "protect[] other members from public exposure, professional retaliation and harassment." So some of those 11 supercomplainers are group efforts.
@cstross Book challenges in Europe: "I will read 52 books next year, one per week"
Book challenges in USA:
@cstross Can't they be outvoted by 12 sane, NON-outraged people?
@cstross terrorism works. And america is terrified.

@cstross The "11 people" figure might be a little misleading -- the article mentions that one person filed dozens of challenges on behalf of a group she belongs to, the idea allegedly being to "protect other members from public exposure, professional retaliation and harassment". It's not clear whether any of the other "serial filers" were doing something similar.

(Still a tiny number of people in a very large country, though.)

@gjm @cstross

"the idea allegedly being to 'protect other members from public exposure, professional retaliation and harassment'"

Ant Man lost my violin in the Quantum Realm. Eh, it was too big for this song anyway....

@cstross This is “majority 11” within the school districts they surveyed, but not majority across the whole country, right?
@cstross can someone find some "objectionable" (in right wing terms) content in Atlas Shrugged, and get it banned please?
@cstross And we all need to push back. Parents can parent all they want...to their own children. Leave everyone else's alone. #NoBookBans
@cstross to be fair, it's not really 11. Biggest trying to ruin public education in America. It's 11 bigots. Taking this part of the overall attempt to ruin public education in America. It's actually a directed effort of probably as many as 1,000 or so. Many of whom are in congress
@cstross And also! If 11 bigots are 6% of the total book haters, *removes shoes, does math* less than 200 total assholes?

@cstross

The complaint system needs something like the "vexatious litigant" doctrine (i.e. file too many frivolous lawsuits, and get ordered to not file any more unless pre-approved by a judge).

Actually, I wouldn''t even include that escape hatch. It's necessary in civil law because even a vexatious litigant could get hit by a drunk driver or something and have a legitimate case. In this context, if some school library actually put porn on the shelf, there are plenty of others to complain.

@cstross So much else is a popularity contest and minorities get no say. How can 11 have so much power.

Also I worked at making sure my kids had books with as much diversity as possible. I’d more likely reject books that are too similar to the many we alreasy had.

@cstross

But why can those "complaints" even be successful?

Who put the necessary laws or regulations into place, that allow "concerned people" to ban books for all others?

@cstross so, that’s fewer than 300 million, right? Or 80-some million voters on either side of recent presidential elections. Or .. uh… what it takes to get traction even in a typical HOA or PTA meeting? Eleven uptight Karens. #whyWeCantHaveNiceThings
