@cstross Reportedly, the vast majority of COVID misinformation can also be traced back to a similarly tiny band of assholes (no word on whether there's any overlap between the two groups, but I'd bet that they're not more than a degree or two of separation apart).

There may not be a single reason why we can't have nice things, but this tawdry little coven of Comstocks shows that the total count is often barely in double digits.

@angusm @cstross I agree there's only a small number of the actively malicious, but the reason they've got the devastating impact they do is because it catches and resonates with the "silent" supportive majority.
@larsmb @angusm @cstross "Majority" (in the USA anyway) only if you count people in a way to account for gerrymandering. Without gerrymandering, many of the politicians pushing this would not have sufficient support to push the bills through.
@Retreival9096 @angusm @cstross The gerrymandering (in the US) persists because the people tolerate it.
I think we make too many excuses for the majority by attributing the outcomes to the malicious few. (I don't deny their existence, but they only have such impact because they are supported.)
@larsmb @Retreival9096 @angusm @cstross it’s more complicated than that because there is an opposition, and even though they are in the minority, the founding documents were written to empower this type of minority specifically to protect slavery. The majority is not large enough to overcome this (hopefully in the future it will be), and is not ready to forfeit “domestic tranquility” to pursue non-governmental change
