Oh hey! I just had my first social media post to be taken down from any platform ever, on LinkedIn. Yay! My post about the flabbergasting amounts of racism in "AI" violated their "professional" community guideline. Indeed. Its quite professional to be as racist as possible, but not professional to call it out. Totally makes sense.
@timnitGebru
Racist speech = Free Speech™️
Speech about racism = BAN HAMMER!
@timnitGebru
I've been trying to get a takedown from the fascist overlords at LI for 2 years. I bow to your art!
@thomkennon @timnitGebru I guess my post where I call DeSantis a nazi is too nice or they didn’t get around to it yet (it’s only some hours old) https://www.linkedin.com/posts/monikaeggers_humanrights-activity-7067475881794883584-6SAo

@timnitGebru My invites are disabled, but somebody should get you a Lobsters account. We can openly call out ethnonationalism and bias in AI, and the admins thank us for it. https://lobste.rs/s/jf3in4/ai_ethics_impossibility_theorems#c_9hp8br is one of my finer moments, as an example.
AI Ethics, Impossibility Theorems and Tradeoffs | Lobsters

@corbin @timnitGebru I can offer an invite to lobsters. DM me here and I can send an invite via email.

However, lobsters has swung away from talking about the intersection of social issues and tech in the last couple of years, making it both boring and irrelevant to me at least. Thank you for keeping up the fight there!

@corbin @timnitGebru IMO, the best large organization that is looking at social issues and tech is the ACM (not without problems). I highly recommend tech folks get a membership. Also a great resource in general.
@mempko Sadly, I can't endorse the ACM's code of ethics; it protects copyright, but we ought to destroy copyright. Nonetheless, I agree; folks should definitely participate in their local ACM chapters.
@corbin I totally agree on the copyright point. Copyright was designed to exploit creators.
@timnitGebru ugh, that's ridiculous. How it's 2023 and we haven't learned that "decorum" supports oppressors is beyond me. 🙄 Good luck getting them to actually accept a spam report though. 🤷‍♂️

@sjkilleen @timnitGebru It is particularly hypocritical on #LinkedIn's part since decorum left LinkedIn long ago near as I can tell.

I **routinely** see racist and discriminatory comments on there - and, even though I blocked many now-former colleagues making those comments, LinkedIn still pushes that trash to me.

Probably high time that I just dumped LinkedIn, frankly.

With that in mind, @timnitGebru, maybe consider not contributing to LockedIn’s network effect by stop posting there?
@cnx and suffer what happened through Mastodon too? I think not!
I’m not on Mastodon, @Icepick87, care to explain?
@cnx you're literally using the Mastodon platform.
@timnitGebru yeah, that’s about white for LinkedIn.
@timnitGebru For contrast: During the pandemic, i flagged a post from a guy saying that unvaccinated people would be the only 'pure blood' people remaining, and that they should all seek to do business together. Silly me thought that sounded pretty eugenicish and flagged it, but they were content to leave it up.
@timnitGebru LOL, which means you are exactly right.

@timnitGebru
Might have been the "ass" reference, I suppose. The post seems pretty on-point overall.

LinkedIn is, IMO, almost totally useless these days. Mostly seems to function as a conduit for recruiters to flood my inbox with job solicitations I don't want (and that they might plausibly be expected to KNOW I wouldn't want.)

@timnitGebru Don't you know, you are supposed to post only positive, business friendly messages on linkedin! /s (Let's ignore that it's owned by Microsoft that also owns OpenAI).
@timnitGebru I knew that platform creeped me out.
@timnitGebru professionalism = not calling out the AI grifters spending ad money on LinkedIn 😅
@timnitGebru
Stating the obvious here. Apologies. Microsoft owns LinkedIn. Microsoft is heavily invested in OpenAI. 🤔
@timnitGebru @http_error_418 Well, I’m *quite* sure if we just stop talking about racism then it’ll go away. I mean, I’ve been *repeatedly* reassured of this by folks who don’t want people to talk about racism, so certainly they’re neutral on the topic.
@timnitGebru I suspect it got taken down for sweary language, something you almost never see on LinkedIn, as it is a platform closely tied to people's work lives.
I doubt it got taken down due to content, as the content is good.
@timnitGebru Isn't the end goal to create stupid, automated, sycophants? They could easily replace 80% of the work force with that and no one would notice.
@timnitGebru yeah, I once reported someone calling for all Socialists to be hanged, and was told this was not violating any policy. I think we all know what the real policy is.

@timnitGebru Wonderful example of tone policing.

Nazi ass little shits.

@timnitGebru LinkedIn often takes down posts with words like “ass” and “shit” in them, even if they are appropriately utilized. They think it’s “unprofessional”.
