Philosopher #PeterSinger, author of #AnimalLiberation is releasing an updated book called #AnimalLiberationNow. Here is an interview he had with #ZoëCorbyn:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/21/philosopher-peter-singer-theres-no-reason-to-say-humans-have-more-worth-or-moral-status-than-animals

I look forward to reading both the old and updated book, and see how much/little has changed. Looks like it will give a bigger spotlight on the #ClimateEmergency aspect in relation to the animal agricultural industry.

A few things I am disappointed about, from a #vegan perspective (#AnnoyingVegan bias incoming):

1. Describing himself as 'flexibly vegan'.
2. Eating oysters (even if oyster farming is apparently an environmentally sustainable industry).
3. His defense of 'consientious omnivores'. Q&A in full:

"Conscientious omnivores oppose factory farming but continue to eat animal products from farmers who treat their animals well and don’t subject them to suffering. Do they get a pass?
Honestly, I can’t show that they are wrong. Assume that the cows wouldn’t have existed if they weren’t going to be sold for their meat and the conscientious omnivores investigate how their food is produced, and can be confident that the animals really do have good lives and are killed painlessly and without suffering – then I think they do get a pass. They’re allies in the movement against factory farming, and a world of conscientious omnivores would produce much less meat and dairy products, with vastly less suffering."

Let me expand on point 3:🧵

Philosopher Peter Singer: ‘There’s no reason to say humans have more worth or moral status than animals’

The controversial philosopher on the importance of updating his landmark book on animal liberation, being ‘flexibly vegan’ and the ethical dangers of artificial intelligence for the non-human world

The Guardian

A. Yes you can show that they are wrong. OK, I didn't write a whole book on the ethics of animal morality 50 years ago (so correct me if I am wrong), but by using a cow an example, let's call the cow Charlene:

A.1. Collecting bull semen from 'father to be' bull
A.2. Inserting fist into anus of 'mother to be' cow
A.3. Impregnating cow with bull semen
A.4. Calf (Charlene) is born and lives out her 'life' in a magical farm where the sun always shines, and winter never greys the green grass
A.5. Charlene turns a year old
A.6. Charlene gets taken to a slaughterhouse (let's just ignore that pesky feedlot to fatten her up) where she is killed and then sent off to the supermarket
A.7. She is then purchased in the supermarket, several times, depending on how many parts she was split into

B. Charlene the cow can live to be up to 15-20 years old. Cows for their meat (or flesh) live to be 2-3 years old before they reach the market weight ( https://sentientmedia.org/how-long-do-cows-live/ ). So her life is reduced from 15 years (let's be pessimistic and say 15 years and assume she didn't get all her B12 from the dirt), down to 3 years. That's only 20% of her life. Imagine a 76 year old being hit by a bus at 15.

How Long Cows Live – If They’re Actually Given The Chance

C. Is a bolt gun to the head painless and without suffering? Sure it's better than #kosher or #halal (right? 🙃 https://www.isahalal.com/news-events/blog/why-halal-slaughter-humane ) but is it completely painless and without suffering? Wouldn't a philosopher with 50 years of ethics and morality experience question this assumption of a 'painless kill'? Is one second of pain equivalent to no pain? Does that mean one punch in the face for a second is ok?

D. Are they really 'allies'? Or are they 'enemies'? Are they more aligned with an omnivore or a #vegan? Who would they associate and connect with more? Is this whole baby step/stepping stone/ #MeatlessMonday situation just a tokenistic way to make people feel better about themselves without doing much about anything (a #CheatDay or 4, per week, is allowed right? Right?). Where are all these allies, 50 years worth, of people, switching over to realising what they are doing is cruel to the animal? Wouldn't 50 years of baby steps from Princeton, be enough to reach Melbourne by now?

Overall, I am sure and confident this book will do incredible things to the animal movement, more than what I ever could, and this little Q&A is such a tiny blip to an otherwise exemplary career and person. I just wish that those that we look up to (don't get me started on #DavidAttenbourough or the #DalaiLama) had this strict level of discipline, or integrity, when it comes to their values more than 50% of the time (recall #ArnoldSchwarzenegger claiming to be 99% vegan 😐).

Otherwise, what's the point of it all? 🌱
