If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?
Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

@rolle I’ve been thinking about this a fair bit, and I think that this is an opportunity for the #Fediverse; if Facebook wants to build a twitter competitor that interacts with everyone else, great, because we get to show them what social media is like *without* algorithms or ads.
Clearly, "we” won’t put up with Meta ads or tracking of *us*, and I don’t know enough about how #ActivityHub works to know if we can stop/control that behaviour.
@WTL @rolle All networks large enough (with humans) actually become ultimately uncontrollable. Meta is not - in the established sense of the word - in control of their own network. The only true control they have is the off-switch. Which would devalue what they have.
Even if facebook joined, they would not have control of how the feed looks to you
But that’s not what would change: The change would be the unpredictability of a billion connections between humans connected by their algorithm.
@WTL @rolle As long as fediverse remains curated by humans, it should by definition remain less unpredictable than algorithmically curated networks.
That doesn’t mean it won’t be a mess if the whole world decides to join, it will just be considerably less of a mess.
But the speed of the network’s actions won’t take it’s owners as much by surprise as the ones boosting stuff automatically.
