Like Hootie & the Blowfish, Counting Crows appealed to folks for whom Billy Corgan’s sneer and Eddie Vedder’s yarl weren’t the be-all/ end-all of popular expression in rock. Although Adam Duritz’s Van Morrison cop on “Mr. Jones” felt too obvious, the rest of the disc relaxes into the kind of music people enjoy as they congregate around kegs and bonfires under the starry, starry night.
