The way Twitter users dealt with #DM #spam was to block DMs from non-followers. There are settings with similar effect on Facebook.

You can also do that on #Mastodon.

THIS IS NOT A HACK. It's literally why the feature exists. Use it. Maybe instead of banhammering the largest single instance on the #Fediverse.

My feeling about it is that if people would rather lose *.social than turn off non-follower DMs, they should personally block the instances.

In any case it's a false dichotomy, since the fedispam problem clearly isn't a mastodon.social problem. They're coming from every server the spammers can identify that has relatively unencumbered registrations. & it'll migrate to non-Mastodon instances, too, once some asshole writes a script for it.
