It's now legal in Florida to deny someone medical care or insurance coverage because you don't approve of their sexual or gender identity.

DeSantis is weaponizing religious beliefs into state sanctioned discrimination.

@georgetakei Honestly this goes past discrimination to genocide.
@anniethebruce @georgetakei I mean, the Hippcratic oath was written 2000 years ago. I guess it's considered obsolete to these people.
@georgetakei it's brutal and cruel, but could also backfire spectacularly
Gov. Ron DeSantis Goes Full Tilt

Over the past few days, as he prepares to announce his challenge to Donald Trump for the GOP presidential nomination, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida staked out three positions that further underscore the danger he presents to our liberal democracy. First, he signed a draconian new law targeting migrants, who are among his favorite political punching bags. Second, he waded further into backing vigilante justice by fundraising on behalf of a man charged with manslaughter in NYC for the killing of a Black subway rider. Finally, he signed another new law green lighting discrimination against LGBTQ+ patients by medical professionals.

The Status Kuo
@MaryPot @gabrielesvelto @georgetakei @jaykuo I believe your headline is incorrect. It should read "Desantis goes full tit" though that may only be understood by UK readers??
@georgetakei something something "The state shall make no law establishing a religion" or something wierd like that.
@georgetakei
Someone who denies medical care because they don't approve of someone's life choices does not understand understand the Hippocratic Oath.
@TCatInReality Pretty sure the Hippocratic Oath isn’t legally binding.
@nofunberg
No, but it is the foundation of their professional ethics.
@TCatInReality @georgetakei Unfortunately there are people who take oaths that quickly forget them when it's convenient to push their personal (& unhinged) beliefs. Note police, politicians, judges, justices, to give a couple of examples...

@georgetakei

And yet, he can't even bother to make sure that legal residents of Florida are guaranteed power to heat their homes in winter! 😮

@georgetakei What's the context for this? Anyone have a link?
DeSantis signs controversial medical conscience bill, touts Florida as 'Prescribe Freedom' state

Gov. Ron DeSantis in Destin to sign four bills, including controversial Protection of Conscience package sponsored by State Rep. Joel Rudman

Pensacola News Journal
@LouisIngenthron @georgetakei (for a moment i didn't notice your post "What's the context for this? Anyone have a link?" was attached to a thread to give it context, and i was very amused.)
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signs bill legalizing anti-LGBTQ+ medical discrimination - LGBTQ Nation

The law allows any medical provider or insurer to deny care based on "ethical, moral, or religious beliefs."

LGBTQ Nation

@georgetakei And so the only people who would take advantage of this new freedom to discriminate are the “good” religious people, since atheism has no moral objection to it. This begs the question: what exactly makes a religious person “good?” And what good does their morality actually accomplish that an atheist’s wouldn’t?

In my perspective, it appears confessing a religious adherence paints you as a bad person unless you reject a lot of your own beliefs. -

@georgetakei - It would seem that the best religious person is one who is an “atheist” who just claims to believe in a deity, but puts no credence in the dogma or teachings. They can then view their fellow humans as people, give them the freedom to live their own lives, and then exercise their own religious customs without interfering with anyone else’s life.
But if they say “I’m a Christian,” they are admitting to at least some immoral practices and beliefs.

@georgetakei I suppose that’s why the founders were deists, since I think that’s what I just described.

Still racist human traffickers who committed atrocities against people in their own time and who should be taken with that in mind, but perhaps their deist approach to religion was a good one.

@georgetakei when are we going to see the #AMA take action? #cowards
@georgetakei so if I don’t approve of someones heterosexuality or maleness or femaleness or diverseness, I can use that to discriminate against anyone I want?
@ArneBab @georgetakei use it to discriminate against cishets xD
@georgetakei
It's been that way in Texas for some time now, as I understand. I shudder to think how I'll be treated.
@georgetakei so much for the Hippocratic Oath in Florida then, visitors should beware.
@Lazarou @georgetakei DeSantis and his supporters prefer the Hypocritical Oath.
@georgetakei Since January, I have send roughly 20 reference letters to employers for (university) colleagues who wish to leave FL and find a job elsewhere. And I live in Belgium …
@georgetakei
I don't like you and your life offends me even though it has ZERO impact on my life, so I am going to subject you to my beliefs for no other reason but to make you suffer.
@georgetakei we need to start seeing Underground Railroads make a comeback at this point
@georgetakei if i had the funding and reach i would try to start it up myself... set up legal (and if need be illegal) methods for people to escape these red states
@georgetakei So I trust they’ll have no issue with businesses denying service to folks specifically because they are straight or cisgendered.
@georgetakei I don't approve of your hetero lifestyle. Denied.
@rbos @georgetakei You are divorced and divorce is expressly forbidden in the Bible. Denied.

@georgetakei

How and why has he been able to pass all of these laws and not be challenged???

This is basic flat out discrimination and goes against the Hippocratic oath too

@georgetakei Again, I believe this is a #firstamendment violation and depending on the intrusions being made with it (I believe they were trying to legislate to override #HIPAA) it could be a #fourthamendment violation as well. It's become clear that #fascists are un-American and choose to ignore and overthrow the U.S. Constitution.
@georgetakei who or what can challenge him on these racist,life endangering “laws”🤬🤬🤬
@georgetakei the only way Americans can accept this is by dehumanizing minorities, e.g. LGBTQ or Jews or POC. Once you take away their humanity, removing basic rights comes next, then gas chambers. It’s happened before, why expect something different now?
@georgetakei Basically state-sanctioned murder, really, considering the suicide rates of trans teens.
@georgetakei Also known as the Hypocrit Oath
@georgetakei serieus? No joke? You must be joking. Please yell me you’re joking.
@georgetakei One day atheists will fight back.
@Paladin @georgetakei Don't assume someone one day will take care of a problem if it's not you taking care of it now. Other people who are not you assume the same and don't take care of it ever.
@georgetakei Looks like he has created the softer side of hate. Next, a police force pushes patients out of getting care by threat of arrest. Then, have them reorder lines in the doctor's offices by rich and poor. When does it end...VOTE!
@georgetakei
#RonDesantis is running for president on the platform of the #PulseNightclub assassin

@georgetakei
This is immoral.

The road to fascism is paved by claims of hyperbole, as I say.

As for the Republicans, it's a party where you see "oh, I see what they are now" and find yourself correcting the Wikipedia page.

@georgetakei authoritarians & MAGA cult fascists are making the 2024 election a stark choice; democracy or a violent religious theocratic oligarchy in which only the rich prosper on the backs of the poor. The latter choice is clearly what the likes of Trump, DeSantis and other Trump sycophants are hell bent on forcing down the throats of 330 million Americans.
@georgetakei
Denying someone medical treatment or care is not part of any religion and we physicians must still consider the Hippocratic oath. Complicated, isn't it? Two strikes against doctors right there. Three and we're in prison.
@georgetakei
I am so happy not to live in the hell hole that America is turning into
@georgetakei I wonder how many federal dollars Florida now has at risk because of this - eg reimbursements from CMS, federal funding from NIH, etc? I bet De Santis is about to find out!

@georgetakei
This apparently includes emergency medical care. So if they don't like that you're trans, gay, Black, or Jewish... they can legally let you die.

Think about that.

@georgetakei This is absolutely unacceptable and an affront to basic human rights and dignity. Everyone should have the right to access medical care and insurance without fear of discrimination.
@georgetakei Weaponizing religious beliefs to discriminate has been going on for quite some time. When Mike Pence was governor of Indiana, he signed off on a bill that would allow people to discriminate based on their religious principles or sincerely held beliefs. I called it a ham-handed attempt to revive Jim Crow and I still say it now.
