How about a visit to an amazing automotive museum? This one is in Los Angeles, it's called the Petersen and if you're in LA, do put aside a day to go visit this place. Gorgeous building, incredible collection. Buy a pass to enter the Vault, no cameras allowed but you get to see more of their collection, tucked in the basement. All sorts of vehicles!

@vwdasher Beautiful!
@Eetschrijver Aren't they! So, so beautiful!
@vwdasher And literally dozens of French makes like Delahaye have disappeared because they just couldn't cope.
@Eetschrijver You had to be super rich back then for these cars, getting them built specially for you. These cars are like the ugly modified Lamborghinis of today, owned by rich people. But far nicer.
@vwdasher Absolutely! But Delahaye, I believe, mainly disappeared because cars with engines over two litres were considered a luxury in postwar France and therefore quite heavily taxed. And their production in numbers was barely one per cent of Citroรซn's at that time.

@Eetschrijver @vwdasher Yes, the French โ€œfiscal horsepowerโ€, based on โ€œsteam horsepowerโ€ or โ€œchevaux vapeurโ€, (hence 2CV for the two fiscal horsepower of the Citroรซn โ€œdeux chevauxโ€) made it much more expensive to own bigger displacement engines. Anything over 2L, as a rough rule, was very difficult to sell in any numbers because of the higher cost of annual registration.

The calculation was modified over the years. Variables also included the number of cylinders.

@Eetschrijver @vwdasher From 1998, the calculation is based on engine power expressed in kW and COยฒ emissions.

Than annual registration renewal fee was abolished in 2001, but there is still an initial registration requirement that imposes a fee per fiscal horsepower (the fee varies by local jurisdiction).

@ZeKik @vwdasher Precisely. The Belgian system is comparable, but even weirder.
@Eetschrijver Oh yeah, these companies were very much niche output.

@vwdasher

It really needs Liberace driving it. Or Groucho Marx.
