Then the attack on Pearl Harbor makes him realize that, »if caught unawares, (a battleship) could be knocked out by little tin flying crates. The evidence was before his eyes. The twenty-year (battleship vs. aircraft carrier) argument was over.«

Wouk is yunger than his protagonist, and, while in the US Navy apparently never served on either battleship or aircraft carrier, this »the era of the battleship ended on 7 December 1941 in Pearl Harbor« reads like his opinion.
And i can’t remember how Pug Henry actually spent the war/the 2nd book.
Ges i hav to read it again, after all.
