On this day in 1993, Bare Bones Software (not yet "Inc.") released the first commercial version of BBEdit.

We've seen and done quite a lot since then, and none of it would've been possible without the enthusiastic and unwavering support of our customers. Thank you all for that. ❤️

As part of the celebration, we've got some goodies. For the next 30 hours, you can use the coupon code "BBEDIT30" to purchase a new individual BBEdit license for US$30.

We've also got some 30th anniversary merch! There's a pin: https://merch.barebones.com/products/bbedit-30th-year-pin , and a T-shirt: https://merch.barebones.com/products/bbedit-30th-anniversary-t-shirt .

These are both available for preorder starting right now.

BBEdit 30th Year Pin

@bbedit @jamesthomson Dude, I’ll be grabbing this! Congrats!!
@bbedit i might have to pick up the "it still doesn't suck" t-shirt! I got one of those when I bought a copy at a MacWorld back in the 90s!

@bbedit Given that it’s difficult to attach a pin to a laptop, and expensive to ship wearable merch overseas, are there any sticker versions available?

Both a sticker version of the pin as well as stickers of the various icons over the years would totally be an instant buy!

@bbedit Went there. Bought the shirt. Thank you so much for all the years of BBEdit.
@bbedit … omg! sweet pin! 😍
@bbedit So happy to be able to get a new "It still doesn't suck" t-shirt!

@bbedit Dammit, I don’t need another vendor t-shirt in my life…

…yes, yes I do, in this case

@bbedit Okay, I went a little silly at https://merch.barebones.com

Congratulations, @siegel and company. Here’s to thirty more years of #BBEdit!

Bare Bones Software
@bbedit 30 years and *still* an incredible piece of software! Happy birthday and thank you for everything 🎉
@bbedit Well thank YOU for being my goto most of those 30 years! Always my first Login Items on a new Mac, because I know I'll be in it almost every day, including weekends.
@bbedit @jamesthomson Would love to purchase, but BBEdit is still not accessible with #VoiceOver. @kevinrj
@bbedit @ppk Gotta love that 9.6px font on the products page. Sheeesh. 🥹
@bbedit Congrats! These days my “computer” is an iPad. I’d certainly buy a copy if you had one for it. I remember when it came on the MacAddict CD. Good times!

@bbedit My favorite tool, and without a doubt the software that I’ve used the longest of any (sorry, DragThing / @jamesthomson but at least PCalc has been along for a good part of that time 😉).

BBEdit was the main reason why I never tried replacing my Mac with an iPad. Through the years, it’s been with me on every Mac processor architecture. From the 68000 through my new M2, my Macs wouldn’t feel like home without BBEdit.

Happy 30th anniversary, and my thanks to you all at Bare Bones!

@johninparis @bbedit @jamesthomson And PCalc celebrated its first 30 years just 5 months ago.
@roadskater @bbedit @jamesthomson Yup! And I’m a big fan and long-time user of it. But I used DragThing even before that.
@bbedit It still doesn’t suck
@bbedit been using it at work since the 90’s!
@bbedit I still use it everyday - congrats on 30y!
@bbedit Congratulations on 30 years, but BBedit is still not accessible to VoiceOver. :( if it were I would have bought it today.
@bbedit This has been my daily driver since the late 1990s, thanks for everything

@bbedit

Wow, I'm amazed that it's been 30 years. I put up my first website in 1994 using a MacHTTP web server and #BBEdit Lite to edit the HTML. I'm still using BBEdit today.

@bbedit

And I still have my (very old) #BBEdit T-shirt! 😀

@bbedit

And thanks to the @internetarchive, I found my review of #BBEdit in the Spring 1997 #BMUG newsletter. (The full newsletter is online at https://archive.org/details/bmug-newsletter-spring-1997, but I redacted my deadname in these screenshots as I've undergone a gender transition since then.)

I recall mentioning this review at the Bare Bones Software booth at Macworld Expo, which is how I got the T-shirt. 😀

@funcrunch We remember! Thank you for that awesome review, Pax. ❤️
@funcrunch @bbedit I need this shirt in my life. Not yours in particular—I’d like one of my own 😁
@bbedit haven’t used it for years (don’t write websites anymore) but remember it fondly!

@bbedit @siegel Finally bought the license this morning. Great piece of software.

Thank you and continue the great work. Love your thorough documentation. 🤩

@cynamiter Thank you so much for your support!

@bbedit I love BBEdit, I have used it for all my web development since 1994 and it truly remains "Software that doesn't suck"

Countless time it has served me for prying open odd files and for so many features, I can summarize as "grep search and replace across hundreds of files"

Thanks for the 30 years! If you don't have a copy, get one today.

@bbedit

I've been a user since the 1990s. 🙂

Righteous software! Thanks!

@bbedit

Three cheers for 30 years of BBEdit. I was there when it was being written, and I've been using it since before it shipped. I've written countless lines of code with it, and though most of my programming days are behind me, I still use it almost every single day for one thing or another. It's one of the most reliable, most useful applications I own. (That's generally true of everything Bare Bones produce, but BBEdit is in a class by itself.)

Time to go get me some new BB swag!

@bbedit I’ve been using the free version for years (it does all I need) but happy to pay this as a thank you.
@bbedit If it weren’t for BBEdit, I probably never would have learned GREP (to the limited extent I have learned it), and my life would be the poorer for it.
@adamrice @bbedit WHO can really say they have learned grep?
@bbedit Congrats, I've probably been a user for most of those years and I can say hands-down that BBEdit has never let me down, and neither have you! 🖤
@bbedit Congrats @siegel. I remember clearly being introduced to it in my first web design class in 1997, so I’m not the oldest user, but I am pretty old.
@bbedit 🥹 30 yr anniversary! 🥳🎉 Congratz!
@bbedit Have been fan and user for years now.
@bbedit @peterme I continue to use it to this day, and have since close to the beginning. It remains a wonderful piece of software.

@bbedit Been using the free version for years and honestly should have already paid for it, so I took the opportunity and purchased a copy.

Didn't really need a shirt or pin, but if you all had stickers... that I would buy 😃

@bbedit

VERY nice discount, for those in need of an excellent text editor (with full RegEx and scripting possibilities). A workhorse.

@bbedit
30 year user here, too.
@bbedit congrats on 30 years! Have used it since BBEdit Lite, and enjoyed a stint as a BareBones employee. Here’s to 30 more!

@bbedit Congratulations!

I guess that makes me around a 30-year customer :) Shocking.

Thank you for making such essential software.

@bbedit I have used BBEdit for years. Works well for me.
