Biden says he’s considering 14th Amendment as debt ceiling option

President Biden on Tuesday said he has been looking at the 14th Amendment as a way to unilaterally work around the debt ceiling, though he acknowledged it will not be a viable short-term solution with the nation on track to default without congressional action by June. “I have been considering the 14th Amendment, and the…

@GottaLaff I hope so. Although, that could go to this corrupt SCOTUS. Surely they don’t want to be the ones to crash the world’s economy.
@GottaLaff Just DO IT so we can move on and so my fixed-income 87yo mom can rest at night and not have to worry about her social security going *poof*. #DebtCeiling #14thAmendment

@PamelaBarroway

Oh that’s an entirely different problem with the Social Security trustees warning us every year that the program is unsustainable!

@GottaLaff

@GottaLaff His statement seems to imply that he thinks it would "have to be litigated" before the Treasury could make payments and borrow more money. Why? He should just order the executive branch to comply with appropriations bills, and leave it up to the GOP to take him to court if they so choose.
@GottaLaff And what about standing, or does that matter any more? Aren't you supposed to demonstrate that something harms you in some way to have standing to sue about it?
@GottaLaff not sure how that would work. Sounds good in theory.

@GottaLaff

Good! That’ll frustrate attempts to — once again — use this process to hamstring the government unless they agree to GOP demands.

@GottaLaff
14th Amendment provides some cover, but I've been saying he should just do it anyway. His job is to lead and protect the United States. Letting the economy crash by not paying the bills would be domestic terrorism. The Congress has a job to do and if it does not do it, he must act.
If we were attacked by an external force and repubs refused to authorize use of force to defend, he would be obliged as CinC to just do it.
@GottaLaff He should definitely do it, but it won't take effect for this crisis. To get through the red tape it would take some months to enact.

@GottaLaff I mean cool and all but there is no way SCOTUS will allow that shit

(Yes... I hate we have to think this way too but I mean they won't even let people save themselves from dying)
