Unionization efforts at the 170-year-old California Academy of Sciences have hit a snag, with management refusing to voluntarily recognize the union, according to the union’s leadership.

This will force the union to campaign and win an election from the majority of the museum’s 500 workers.

Cal Academy union facing resistance from management

Unionization efforts at the 170-year-old Cal Academy have hit a snag with  management refusing to voluntarily recognize the union.

Mission Local

California Academy of Sciences REJECTED the workers’ request for non-interference and neutrality with regards to their organizing campaign, i.e. management will probably meddle and try to persuade workers not to organize.

By rejecting [workers’] request, [Cal Academy management] are reserving the right to interfere in a number of ways. This includes leadership sending emails or creating a website to spread misinformation about our organizing effort, management holding meetings to influence our decisions, and hiring union avoidance lawyers.

CalAcademy Workers United – Blog 1

CalAcademy Workers United
I have known of nonprofits in SF spending tens of thousands of dollars to hire anti-union consultants and lawyers, all to fight their own workers' desire for better working conditions. It is an absurd practice and an insult to their donors.
That #CalAcademyWorkersUnited logo tho. So well done. *Chef's kiss*
@chema @chema Not surprised. Seemingly “progressive” non-profits are just as regressive as the likes of Walmart and Starbucks when it comes to unions. It’s disgusting.
