Research Assistant
Job Description: The Research Assistant will primarily assist in carrying out awake-behaving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments in nonhuman primates (NHPs). The position entails training NHPs, preparing NHPs for awake fMRI scanning, performing fMRI scanning, and the use of computers for running experiments and preparing visual stimuli. Other duties may include assisting other lab members with NHP training, and administrative work. Opportunities for involvement in data analysis and other research-related activities will exist, but are not required. The laboratory of Theresa Desrochers’ over-arching goal is to understand the neural bases of cognitive and behavioral sequences through research that integrates human and animal experimental models. These complementary levels of analysis allow the lab to construct an understanding of sequential control spanning cells, networks, and behavior. Tasks for this position will mostly focus on a single project in the lab, and therefore may be well-suited for someone preparing to apply to graduate school, but this is not a requirement. This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 6/30/2026, which may be extended based upon available funding. Grade 7 Job Qualifications Education and Experience: Required: Bachelor’s degree in a life science, physical science, or engineering. Required: Prior related experience in practical hands-on animal research in an animal research setting. And/or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Job Competencies Interest in scientific research. Ability to work as part of a research team. Ability to support the lab group and to interact with a diverse range of individuals. Ability to work independently as well as collaborative with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training. Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS office, Google Suite, etc.). Initiative to learn computer software for experiments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational, record keeping, task prioritization, and report preparation skills. Outstanding problem-solving skills, ability to implement solutions. Ability to frequently communicate with faculty and staff who inquire about their research. Must be able to exchange accurate information. Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
