@Lowie I think what else we could do is require gun owners to carry insurance. Let the insurance industry destroy the gun industry like they did healthcare.
@DebR @Lowie
My belief exactly. Why let people possess deadly weapons on easier terms with less liability than owning a car?

@DebR @Lowie

I'm pretty sure the insurance companies wouldn't cover gun crimes, so they'd only be on the hook for accidents. Which would probably keep the premiums affordable.

@jonhendry @DebR @Lowie But they would also be invested in ensuring accidents didn’t happen, which would mean they’d get all up in the business of gun owners, training discounts, location tracking discounts etc. They’d then get subpoenaed after ever criminal act about why they didn’t exclude the person from coverage.

@josephholsten @jonhendry @DebR @[email protected] The insurance companies would also be invested in making sure some of these gun crimes that get written off as "accidents"... don't.

Money talks.

@DebR @Lowie
We could also tax the crap out of bullets, the way we taxed cigarettes into becoming unpopular. It won't solve everything, but it will make buying a 50-round clip too expensive for most people.

ACTIVE military and ACTIVE law enforcement would be exempt, of course, as long as it was purchased through a govt account. Don't let the retired vets and off-duty cops take the discount for their recreational shooting.

full coverage ...

🤣

@DebR @Lowie If one follows the idea that every gun owner is a law-abiding citizen and will never break the law, insurance would be a non-issue. But the insurance industry does research and statistics and that fantasy is quickly dismissed.
@DebR @Lowie In some states, there are laws prohibiting increasing rates due to gun ownership. Even so, they don't care. Most of the time, insurance companies will wiggle out of any gun related claim under the guise of "willful neglect". Basically, they make the case you bought the gun knowing the inherent risks and they don't have to pay damages you caused in using it.
