Absolute gold. πŸ… My kids think this already.

Der 56k Modem Klang - The 56k dialup modem sound

YouTube
@zerosouls @major
"Dial-up? What did you dial? A phone? Sure, boomer."
@zerosouls @major
Aaaaaaaahhhhhh oOoOO oOoOO EEEEEEEEEEE eeeeerrRRRRRRRRRR BWOM BWOM BWOM
@major someone should make NetworkManager plugin to generate those sounds.
@hrw @major some routers are able to show the spectrum used in DSL connections. That info could probably be used to reconstruct the frequency mix. Or we loop a wire around one wire of the DSL connection. However, I do not know how to construct this for fibre optics.
@major To be fair, it still comes through my phone and largely consists of screaming bots so...
@ScottMGS @major the circle is complete! we're back to screaming robots!
@major I still remember how the sequence of beeps and screeches of a successful modem connection sounded like. Oh, those were horrid times! 😱
@god @major For the more technically inclined https://www.windytan.com/2012/11/the-sound-of-dialup-pictured.html the author is on the fediverse.
The sound of the dialup, pictured

If you ever connected to the Internet before the 2000s, you probably remember how it sounded. But what do these sounds mean?

absorptions
@major Now the internet comes through the smartphone and it sounds like robots screaming nonsense.
@major So true. I used to work with people who could tell the speed of the connection by the buzzing and screeches. I kinda miss that.
@ScruffyJunco
I used to be able to tell the difference between 14k4, 33k6 and 56k modem connections... many 56k modems didn't let you hear the sound anymore though. I thought that was a loss, I liked the sound of screaming robots...
@major
@wmd @ScruffyJunco @major I liked it too, even more I loved it! It was the sound of the door to the room where you could talk to anyone, anywhere! Incredibly heady stuff, like science fiction, but it's real!
@major I feel seen!!! 🀣
@major: The kids these days just can't hear the low-pitched screeching of the Internet robots.

@major Yep. You had to fit two rubber cups on the receiver.

(Kid wonders what a receiver was.)

That's part of the phone, dear.

( Kid wonders where you'd fit rubber cups on a smartphone.)

@major Kids? I have work colleagues that think this!
@major the problem is that all the cables today are sound insulated, and wifi waves do not have sound, so we cannot hear their constant screams for help. If only we all knew the horrors within…
@major The internet *is* nothing but screaming robots.
@major Or you get a pat on the head. Yes, you already told us that πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
@major Content Warning dude - CONTENT WARNING. I feel attacked
@major OMG, I just heard that telephone modem screech in my head when I read this.

You should show them this (or related) video(s) :)

@major My favorite variant of that:

Computers used to scream out in pain when we connected them to the Internet. We didn't listen to this warning. Now it's too late.

@major Today on the internet, the robots sound like screaming humans.
This is what dialup sounded like...

ALL Old Modem Sounds (300 baud to 56K)

YouTube
@major
Haha it really did sound like screaming robots. I also remember the screaming robots noise when taking 5m to load a ZX Spectrum game from tape! 😲
@major I always thought of it as machines finding harmony πŸ˜„
@major So cool. In fact, I am "300 baud" and "$0.50 per kilobyte" years old. πŸ˜„
@major OH:”It didβ€πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
@major it sounds still the same way, but current day router don't use loudspeakers to tell anybody. 🫣 Could be a nice maker project.πŸ€”
@major Remember that extra little β€œbong” you’d get on a 56k connection? So satisfying.

@major
I heard it in my head the moment I read it.

The rest of you old farts know exactly what I’m talking about.

@major
Ha!

I knew I had seen, and boosted, this one before, recently, and here it is, from 12 days ago!

Of course I boosted it from today's person, as well. It's a good meme. πŸ‘

This is not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last.

No "breaches of etiquette" were made, and none are implied. No one "stole" anything from anybody. It's kinda silly to claim ownership of a meme once it's in the wild and reproducing, anyway.

#TheArtOfShitposting

@major you might be amused to learn that we heard the screaming robots for the first time in many years yesterday, when our voice line got a wrong number call from a modem.

We really wondered who it was and what they were doing, but weren't quite bold enough to dig out a modem try and contact them back.

@major It's funny because it's true!
