Something has gone terribly wrong when Fox News can claim a tax write-off for its $787M defamation settlement, yet school teachers only get a measly $300 deduction for buying their own supplies.
Fox Can Claim Tax Writeoff For Defamation Settlement

The company says it can deduct the cost of its $787 million payout to Dominion over its election lies.

The Lever
@rbreich I think I'm going to be sick....
@rbreich if selling lies is your business, paying for those lies seems like a legitimate business expense.
@rbreich I was gonna joke that maybe teachers should spend more money on lobbyists than school supplies then but that would sadly possibly work
@rbreich OH COME ON

@squeevening @rbreich

Well, clearly, teachers need to spend more time defaming. Simple.

@squeevening @rbreich

Realistically, reducing a companies cash flow or profit, will always automatically reduce the amount of payable tax.

They will almost certainly take out a credit repayable over years, and these type or repayments will almost always be to some degree tax deductible. 🤷‍♂️

Fox News Can Claim Dominion Settlement As Tax Deduction

The company could write off a large portion of its $787.5 million settlement it owes Dominion as an income tax deduction

Rolling Stone
@rbreich Yes, Sec. Reich, something has gone terribly wrong and I hope someone can come up with a solution, I don't see one at this time.
@rbreich I believe it's called "capitalism"
@rbreich My wife spends THOUSANDS of dollars every year on her classroom. But yeah, $300 of it is tax deductible.
@rbreich Except for the fact that Fox News actually has to pay $787M, and school teachers only pay $300 (in your example).

@RodgeNichols @rbreich

I wonder how much that figure of spending on materials is collectively for all teachers.
Happens in the UK, too.

@RodgeNichols @rbreich no, read it again. She paid THOUSANDS but is limited to a $300 deduction. They get to deduct the entire $787 million….we pay $15,000 in real estate taxes, but can only deduct $10,000 because of GOP tax give away.
@RodgeNichols Teachers spend more than $300 on school supplies.
@rbreich This is just the Fixed News exploiting things in the US, yet again... It's not like they are a news channel, so...

@rbreich Businesses get to deduct their living costs because otherwise they'd die.

People don't get to deduct their living costs because otherwise they'd be able to live.

@rbreich
Regular truly good people who help family or volunteer their time, etc. will never get the same breaks as the wealthy who, by virtue of their wealth, are powerful.
It sucks, but I'm too old to hope anything will change in my lifetime.
@rbreich NO NO NO. This is not right.
@rbreich
Wait? That's a tax write-off? They don't have to pay taxes on money as long as they are using it to pay off companies whom they lied about on air?
@rbreich When has western capitalism not been set up to give most of the benefits to the corporations and the rich?
@rbreich
It's always been that way; losses from civil suits are considered to be part of doing business. (Not saying that's right, but just that this really isn't news.)
@rbreich We are living in Alice through the Looking Glass alternate Universe where everything is opposite to our world. Every single character is alive & trying to run this reality. Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, Tweedledumb & TweedleDumber! Children, off w their heads! Guns, worship them! Of course, all those hallucinogenic cocktails that Alice drinks too.
@rbreich Then they're not actually being punished for their lies and will just do it again.
@rbreich It's capitalism, that's how it's supposed to work.

Robert, this is the informal logical fallacy of tu quoque or 'whataboutism'.

It isn't a valid argument.

@rbreich

@hhardy01 @rbreich It was an observation, at most an assertion.
