I’m not looking to join blue sky yet for my own reasons but also this is accurate plus the way black folks were first treated here by some of the biggest instances explain the appeal.
Even I, as a terminally online person, still couldn’t engage with mastodon in any meaningful way till I got @ivory because the out of the box UX is so shoddy.
@dbsmasher @ivory hah! Yeah, same, but I ditched the official app very quick coz it was annoying and used Metatext (that’s is really good, btw but th developer not gonna update it anymore) -then ivory came.

@boby_biq @dbsmasher @ivory I complained about the official iPhone app and was scolded that there was no official app*. We’ve always been at war with Oceania.

*It’s literally called “Official iOS app for Mastodon” on GitHub.

@mikeschnier lol, akshuallyyyyyyyyyy.. 🤣 ah yes.
I had to force myself to ignore the scolding - I didn’t necessarily got scolded (not much, anyway) but generally started to block ppl who are doing this weird “well, actually” thing.life is short.

That’s said: I like mastodon/fediverse a lot, it started to “work” for me and im happy.
Even started to think of having my own personal server, haha.

@mikeschnier OMG you work for Toon Boom? Is that the software that was called Toonz before? I worked with that 100years ago!
@mikeschnier OR my memories have..holes.. and I’m mixing/misremembering stuff - not unusual for me 🙈
@boby_biq Close! We make Harmony and Storyboard Pro. Toonz is a competitor.
@mikeschnier lol. Sorry, as I said, it’s been a while.. *cough* more than 20yrs..* cough*

@dbsmasher @ivory I'm not keen on the default view, but I am a big fan of "advanced view" which is very akin to Tweetdeck. Having multiple columns, each focused on different topics, has been handy.

As for mobile, I manage with the standard app, but I don't mobile toot much at all, so it's tolerable.

@dbsmasher @ivory @film_girl Ouch. Suscribed to ivory myself. It‘s just nice.

But dissing free software someone offered on their free time. Sounds pretty abusive in my ears.

@icing @dbsmasher @ivory I like @IceCubesApp a lot too! But I’m not going to apologize for stating that it took the good iOS developers (and the web devs behind things like Elk) to make Mastodon worth using for me. Just b/c something is free doesn’t mean I have to pretend it doesn’t have deficiencies, esp. when it has been clear for years that UX was not a priority.
@film_girl @dbsmasher @ivory @IceCubesApp Sure, valid. Just disagree with using "shoddy". Seems unnecessary.
@icing @film_girl @dbsmasher If you don’t have an appetite for harsh criticism, running a social network is a mistake. Users make less kind comments about smaller issues all the time.
@icing @film_girl @dbsmasher I don’t think an end-user complaining about a bad experience is abusive, unless they’re tagging you, constantly sending you emails and being a dingus about it.

@dbsmasher To be fair, Ivory was pretty ‘shoddy’ out of the box. You couldn't edit posts, and had no accessibility features.

Shoddy is pretty harsh for something that enabled your preferred app to thrive.

I use Ivory now, BTW.

@dbsmasher @ivory I can’t stand how Ivory or Mammoth apps display media compared to the offical app.
@dbsmasher
I swear Mastodon is like almost all tech geeks who don't understand that non tech geeks find the site and app intimidating. And then when Eugen tries to change that a teensy tiny little bit, by say making one server default to lessen the chance of ending up on the wrong one, which can be a bad experience especially for minorities, they start screeching about how it's shifting from its vision.
Then they go back to wondering why it's not getting broad adoption by other demographics...
@Pineapple @dbsmasher I am not a tech geek. I understand enough to get by when necessary. I find Mastodon the most confusing. But I keep coming back and trying.
@Pineapple
It pains me that the "it's the principle!" people have had the loudest voice there. As far as I'm concerned, the biggest issue with funneling everyone into .social is that it's already too big for them to moderate well, and the moderators they have have been pretty inconsistent.

That's a fixable issue, though. Eugen has multiple domains. He can set population sizes. He can train better moderators.

And he will. Things are just moving faster than expected.

For the rest of us with servers, Eugen's defaults now become recruiting stations. Places where we can try and show users they can have a better, more taylored experience in a smaller community.

But I guess we don't want to compete with the substandard-but-better-than-on-many standards seen on the default, so it's "but the principles!"
@dbsmasher
@dbsmasher Also not looking to join Blue Sky, but if other people want to then that's okay. I hope they find a place they feel comfortable, and hopefully it stays that way. For profit social networks tend to boost extreme views because doing so increases engagement. Plus, the Blue Sky moderation settings look like they're preparing to host extreme content in the future.
