I'm... really wondering how a capitalist-run completely unmoderated social network intends to get advertisers, since that's usually their whole plan for solvency.

Even as theoretically open as Fedi is, we moderate the shit out of our own instances, and the rest is a wasteland nobody wants to be in. And we don't even care about the suits with money.

"Just use community blocklists" doesn't uh, work, unless advertisers are targeting via community blocklists, and oh my we could have fun with that if they're stupid enough to try.

@glassbottommeg every SV-backed social thing always does the dumb "lol we don't need to moderate, we'll use technology and wishful thinking I guess!" and then they quickly realize they need to start hiring moderators if they want to actually attract any advertisers.
@cailinkins @glassbottommeg i wonder if a valid way of auto-moderating these platforms would be to feed the posts to a LLM and measure how long it takes for the word "nazi" to show up 🤷 not sure how many posts would survive though 🤔

@glassbottommeg if you mean bluesky, I’m not sure they do? It’s set up as a public benefit LLC and Jack threw a bunch of money at it.

It might just be like Mozilla or something. Also I’m not sure where people are getting the idea that it’s unmoderated rather than “being built”. It’s already got a “report” button and content filters.

@glassbottommeg fun fact: bluesky doesn't support blocking
@psilocervine @glassbottommeg it also doesn’t support gifs or videos. It’s really at the MINIMUM of MVP right now.

@glassbottommeg The things I really appreciate about the fediverse, are the things that I really miss about my old phpbb forums. Protective communities built around shared interests where ban hammers were strong and advertisers not invited. Plus federation gives the added benefit of not being quite so insular.

Un-moderated is such a repellent prospect for me as a user it's hard for me to imagine it not being similarly repellent for investors.

@Sarahnade yep. The people who bounce off it mostly seem to not be used to how forums worked, or not thinking of it that way- but once you do, it clicks, and yay!
@glassbottommeg without any moderation any business will not want to be advertising on it tbh so yeah I share in your question here...
@glassbottommeg I'm thinking about brands.town
