What's really behind Republican's mounting transphobia?

And why all of us must speak out against it.

Robert Reich
@rbreich Why everyone needs to speak up, right here. I’m not trans, I’m not gay, but unlike a lot of people it would seem, I’ve met, worked with and befriended many from the LGBTQ community and I know they’re people - human beings - just like you and me. I also had parents who grew up under and suffered under fascism, so I have an understanding of its stink and its self-serving blood lust. We will all have blood on our hands if we all just sit here like dummies, doing and saying nothing.
@rbreich I suspect a lot of straight guys are like, yeah, this is disturbing, but if I take action to express my disgust or discomfort, people will think I’m gay. You know what? All that means is the fascists already got you where they want you: cowed and intimidated. Imagine—if the threat of merely being mistakenly identified as gay has you running for cover—imagine how it must feel to actually be gay or trans and facing the very real threats and repression and hate being aimed at you.

@rbreich exactly, it is the normalisation of hatred.

Also, it is distraction from the real issues. It distracts from all their other attempts to remove rights (voter rights, worker rights, etc.).

We've been conditioned over the past few decades to accept the belief, that there is no slippery slope. It's seen as a lazy argument. Maybe it just the term that is wrong. It's not a slippery slope accidentally slid down. It's a designed staircase, we are descending.

@rbreich

This women will be remembered as one of the hereos of the revolution, along side with the "three from Georgia". We need this kind of heroes in all parts of the US, actually of the world: in parliaments, schools, factories, farms, administrations, commerce, etc.

@rbreich

Don't confuse disruptive speech to a fake "phobia."

As Levar Burton said in regards to speech:

"Yet let me remind you: Bigotry against minority groups based on sexual orientation or gender Identity, such as the trans community, is a way fascism takes root."

Nazis targeted the LGBTQ community as well as the Jewish community. Stoking fear and hatred of the "other" is a proven way to manipulate people into giving up their own freedoms. The GOP is following the authoritarian playbook.

With reproductive ‘shield bills,’ Vermont lawmakers seek to be a ‘beacon of hope’ for transgender patients

While state legislatures across the country are passing laws chipping away at access to gender-affirming care and transgender rights, Vermont lawmakers are offering a sharp contrast.

@rbreich thank you. Much of the left doesn’t seem to care
@rbreich what? The fact that they can’t fundraise abortion. I have to say I am quite sick of the kind of extortion practiced here.

@rbreich

This is an evil idea, but what if there was a campaign to convince Republicans that trans folk are actually caused by climate change? Excessive CO2, over generations, messed with their Precious Bodily Fluids…

Because you can't beat Stupid with Truth. Been tried. And we already know they won't check History.

@WillRobinson

@teledyn @rbreich @WillRobinson they would just keep killing trans people. You're not giving them a new enemy, you're giving them something else to blame on the people they already decided are their enemy.
