@caseyliss @1password when you accept VC money the investors are your customers.
@Eggfreckles @caseyliss @1password I haven’t come across this thought expressed so eloquently yet, bravo.
@caseyliss Honest question, Casey - I'm also a @1password user for 15+ years. As frustrating as the Electron app (and the browser extension that "kinda" works) can be, do you really think telemetry like this is bad? I want to give the team positive feedback for overall positive moves.

@sethadam1 @1password In and of itself, no, telemetry doesn't bother me. And rolling it out to your own internal users first is šŸ‘šŸ»

But it seems pretty clear that this isn't a problem that needs solving: customers have been SHOUTING FROM THE ROOFTOPS explaining what is wrong. Just fucking listen.

@caseyliss I use 1P for Teams with three different orgs, and I've had lots of problems with the browser extension. I eventually had to use the "disconnect from local app" option, so I'm not gonna disagree with you there...

@sethadam1 @caseyliss the core app has been mostly fine for me, but yeah the browser extension has become absolutely garbage over the last few months.

I moved everything over to iCloud Keychain today.

@caseyliss @sethadam1 maybe they’re using a form of Radar …

@sethadam1 @caseyliss collecting telemetry can be good. Anonymizing is good.

But… making it opt-out is bad.

@caseyliss @1password I need an AI to translate that post to human language
@caseyliss @1password The Hacker News comments for this blog post feel like a good summary of the overall sentiment of personal users of 1P right now. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35691383
1Password to Add Telemetry | Hacker News

@caseyliss @1password It’s so disappointing. The data people are taking over and that’s never good for the product.
@stevex @caseyliss @1password yeah you are right, it's never good to understand how users use a product šŸ˜…
@caseyliss @1password I've got no more loyalty left for 1P. As soon as a competitor manages to get my attention (I'm too busy to trial alternatives), I'm gone. All it takes is a Podcast or Blog post I guess.

@1password Have to agree with @caseyliss on this one. Been using Apple’s keychain (because it’s already there) more and more. Have also been looking at other 3rd party solutions.

Bugs aside (they’re numerous and Casey has pointed these out to you), my biggest gripe is how poor an experience the browser plug-in has gotten. Not only does it look cheap and clunky, but it always manages to get in the way of forms and fields that Keychain manages to avoid. 😩

@_greenk @1password @caseyliss Yes, yes, and yes! I also look grimly towards Passkey support, which Apple and Keychain already deal with admirably and 1PW is beta-testing only in the Chrome extension. So much for Mac first.
@caseyliss @1password There were some bugs that frustrated me, so I went to Last Pass for almost a year. Yikes! Bugs are now lower on my list of issues I worry about with my password manager.

@caseyliss @1password I’m right there with you. I’m firmly in the camp of not wanting to bother with the hassle of moving.

(Plus I JUST got my wife bought in on 1P)

@caseyliss Oh, alas. I’m thankful that 1Password 7 is still functional, because otherwise I’d be even more intent on moving everything to the Keychain implementation. VCs, amirite?
@caseyliss @1password I’m dreading the inevitable day when I need to migrate to a new password manager. It’s going to happen, and probably sooner than I expect…
@matthubble @caseyliss @1password Same here... I've tried to move to Bitwarden once, but back then it didn't work out for me.
@caseyliss @1password thanks for the reminder to move my stuff to the Keychain.
@caseyliss @1password If Apple would just do a few more things to bring their password manager up to snuff I’d drop 1PW in a minute.
1. Family Sharing
2. Allow multiple domains per login (so all the domains that use Microsoft login stay in sync for example)
3. Add wider support on other platforms
@caseyliss @1password Been a customer for 10 years. They’ve become out of touch with the release of 1p8. Waiting for the Proton one.
@caseyliss @1password for those looking for an alternative, take a look at Keepass open standard and a very good implementation in a form of Strongbox app. Local vaults you can share and sync using iCloud or other file sharing service, decent UI, full control…

@caseyliss @1password as a counterpoint. I’m a business (and personal) user of 1Password since almost ten years. I *love* the direction they’ve been taking last few years. So many really good features for teams. We’re not even a big company, 40 people, but the credential and secret management, cli support, infrastructure integration. It’s all been šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

I’m not trying to invalidate your experience, just telling about a different one.

@doculmus this is precisely what I meant when I said I’m not the customer anymore
@caseyliss I understand, I just feel that they are actually listening to at least a subset of their customers
@caseyliss I do get the ā€œyou used to be different, man!ā€ sentiment
@caseyliss tbh, I’ve felt the same about Apple sometimes, during the butterfly keyboard period for instance.

@caseyliss @1password telemetry is simply a way for them to reinforce whatever thing they were trying to prove. In the same way you can affect a survey by asking leading or biased questions, you can manipulate usage patterns by recording only the specific things you need.

It’s basiclly a way for someone to justify their decisions or hit a KPI.

@caseyliss @1password When you’re no longer the customer, move on. My life post-1Password (and others) continues quite well.
@caseyliss Rough few years ahead for us families who will continue to share passwords with 1Password until iOS fully supports sharing.
@caseyliss @1password Reads like AI generated corporate speak.

@caseyliss @1password I have been clinging to 1P7, and their insistence on the current path has me questioning whether I should bump to 1P8 or look for an alternative (though I'm not sure what that alternative might be).

Either way they'll be forcing the issue soon, as browser plugin support for 1P7 is being slowly deprecated--no longer works on Chrome for Mac, and will soon be gone for Firefox on Windows.

@caseyliss I'm not trying to be a shit stirrer or troll. How does a software company like @1password choose which customers to listen to? I am a customer, have been since version 2. Everything they have brought for version 8 has been great. I have no problems with app, or the Safari plug in. And the Windows version being nearly identical to the Mac version has been really useful. I'm cheap, and would love to move to iCloud for passwords, but not working with Windows is a deal breaker for me.
@oversteer @caseyliss FWIW, iCloud Keychain does, on Windows, work with Edge and Chrome. Nothing else so far, though.
@caseyliss I think collecting data to figure out if people are actually using certain features and how is actually very reasonable for any software product.
@caseyliss @1password Can it get worse than 1P8? Apparently it can šŸ™„
@caseyliss Any good recommendations for an alternative?
@caseyliss @1password I know you’re not looking for recommendations, which is why I’m not going to suggest any, but I was in the same boat when 1password started slowly pivoting towards their subscription services. I’m all for cloud sync, but I wanted to be in control of my data. Maximizing profits unfortunately sometimes leads to compromises some find unacceptable. And that’s ok 🤷

@radu yes, it is okay:

ā€œ(One day I'll embrace that I am no longer the customer 1Password cares about, but I'm currently in the DENIAL stage of grief.)ā€

@caseyliss @1password shan’t and won’t upgrade. Chasing growth has led them to abandon their original customer base.

@caseyliss @1password I’ve been a customer and vocal advocate for over a decade. It’s been a hard pill to swallow since they started to let their cards show in run-up to v7.

Knowing I’m a customer they are no longer concerned with does sting.

@caseyliss I’ve been slowly but surely moving everything to Apple’s built in password manager. Even works on Windows now for people that need to sync to another OS.

I’ve been using 1Password a long time but the direction of the company has been worrying me.

@caseyliss @1password I'm gonna be the one that will swim against the stream here.

Full disclosure: I am a huge ATP fan and 100% Mac user since 2016.

I use 1Password 8 all day long and have pretty much 0 issues with it.

And yeah the telemetry feature feels kind of weird for such a sensitive app. But from what I read they will let you opt-out (I will do that) 😊

@caseyliss @1password

This is sign of a company that has lost its way. I enjoy this product so much Inhave a Family subscription and a Teams/Business subscription.

Casey is right, never stop listening to your customers.

@caseyliss @1password I’ve used the product for many years and loved it until this buggy Electron garbage. My Families sub renewed yesterday, but I get a free family sub to a competing product from work. Never considered it before, but if my choices are between 2 products I don’t like as much as the old 1Password, why not use the no cost option?
@caseyliss @1password will be blocking this with Little Snitch.
@caseyliss @1password Safari is my browser of choice and the absolutely abysmal state of the 1PW for Safari extension is the reason I'm hoping for a standalone Apple Pass Ā· Ā· Ā· Ā· app come next WWDC. It needs password history though. šŸ¤ž
@caseyliss @1password I wonder if they noticed some people are reverting to/staying on 7, and why they're doing it. That's a mystery solvable without advanced analytics.
@caseyliss @1password I agree, what are you considering to replace it?
