This weekend, Germany will turn off their last nuclear reactor.

This atomic exit was decided, in part, by a political compromise that has enabled the expansion of renewables.

Even so, exiting nuclear before exiting coal feels extremely backwards from an environmental perspective.

Until 2022, a clear majority of the German public supported the exit from nuclear power.

Somewhat ironically, that changed after the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent energy disruptions.

Since then, a majority of Germans have favored prolonging the existing nuclear reactors, e.g. 2/3 favoring a 5-year delay (https://www.spiegel.de/panorama/atom-umfrage-41-prozent-der-deutschen-wollen-neubau-von-kernkraftwerken-a-a44d8513-89b3-4243-aeb5-609edf2be9f6), but the government has forged ahead with the shutdown.

@RARohde It seems that the majority is receptive to propaganda. This is also in line with the IQ distribution.
@RARohde Especially as extra coal has filled the gap as nuclear was reduced in the last 2 years.
@RARohde yeah, that plot makes no sense. Get rid of the coal first!

@RARohde

As long as both are decreasing, it is progress, methinks...

@RARohde @eniko more coal, more oil, it’s very green; meanwhile Finland starts it’s new reactor for 16% of it’s needs.
@RARohde NPPs are blocking out renewables, so it makes perfect sense to shut them down.
(If theres a power surplus, NPPs can't be regulated down for a bit, so grid managers block off wind/solar instead. Whenever you saw a bunch of WPPs standing still although there's wind blowing, it probably is because of that)
@RARohde what does “other RE” consist of?
