Okay so I've done this and the actual solution is USB tethering of a mobile hotspot. Works like a charm.
@benjaminhollon @Kvnklly I installed #ZorinOS16 a few months ago onto an old mbp and the wifi drivers worked first time. I’d tried a couple of other distros first and ran into that problem but Zorin worked great.
@benjaminhollon didn't know this.... we learn everyday

Yep!

The first time I tried, I was luckily going to be installing the OS on a USB (rather than the mac's storage drive, which was borked), so I just booted the USB on another computer, installed the driver, then moved it back to the Mac.

@Kvnklly a friend of mine was installing Arch in a dual-boot config on his 2013 macbook
He wanted to be able to transfer files between the two filesystems without an external drive but was struggling
He tried a bunch of different stuff from creating shared folders to installing apfs drivers, etc. and nothing was working
Then we figured we could just add an exfat partition
