"Why won't you pay the $8?"

Five months ago, before she died, my 91-year-old great-grandmother described to me how, while her mother was taken to the gas chambers by the Nazis, she asked her mother, "Where are you going?" and "When are you coming back?" She never saw her mother again. I was literally shaking while I was listening.

Now, when I checked Twitter, I bumped into two accounts, one "verified," and the other one lost their "verification" yesterday. I'll just leave it right here...

@DavidSchwartz Congrats #Elmo. You created the exact #FreeForAllHellscape you vowed to protect against. Best to be well clear of it.
@DavidSchwartz
Alron needs to be sent back to South Africa and let the have nots deal with him. THE POOR

@DavidSchwartz

Everyone:
➡️ Give them a follow if you haven't already, they are verified here on Mastodon:
Auschwitz Memorial
@auschwitzmuseum

@DavidSchwartz this whole thing makes no sense... the check mark used to have value to the person viewing the content of the person with the check... now the value is... um what is the value of that check now? It's almost like this whole situation is stupid for everyone involved... or maybe 100% completely stupid.
@thistimeforsure @DavidSchwartz The value is $8, sadly. It's all about the money.
@Gillinger @DavidSchwartz it's the cost for sure, not confident it's the value.
@thistimeforsure @DavidSchwartz also when verification on Mastodon is free and maintenance donations are voluntary.

@thistimeforsure @DavidSchwartz The reason the blue check was introduced first and foremost was that twitter was risking being held liable for libel if no reasonable steps were taken to ensure no one could impersonate public figures to damage their reputation.

The blue tick thing was to protect themselves first and foremost...

@DavidSchwartz Well, I’m going to need a shower after copying and pasting the text from that image but people who use screen readers deserve to see it too:

Screenshot of a tweet from a verified account called “Not your safe space” with video of Hitler juxtapositioned with the Twitter profile of the Auschwitz Memorial (unverified).

1/2 #AltText

@DavidSchwartz (Cont. alt text)

Tweet reads: “They knew. They knew what laid ahead, generations from their time. How far would be too far to protect your children and you children's children from the strongly advancing societal decay that envelops us today? What would you not give to yours to guarantee a future without it?”

(If you like, you can edit the post and add this alt text to the image directly which would make it easier for people who use screen readers.)

#AltText 2/2

@DavidSchwartz @aral these people should go one time in their life to a place like @auschwitzmuseum . I was in Dachau, which is smaller. This was the most intense education I experienced in my life. It shaped my thoughts about all these things since I was a young man. Coming from an household with only few books it was necessary. One time there and they would not post such bs any more
@DavidSchwartz We won't forget. May God bless you and keep you and yours all the days of your life.

@DavidSchwartz I am so sorry about what happened to your great & great great grandmothers. Doubly horrific because it isn't just history. Hate is becoming dominant once again.

We need to work toward deep awareness so that #NeverAgain means for all people, everywhere.

@DavidSchwartz this actually made me feel very sick for few minutes, I thought I have hardened against it for last 5 years.
@DavidSchwartz what I find strange is that corporate media persists on that site. I get that it’s hard to change, and that you would lose some audience, but any corporation who is using Twitter is tacitly promoting everything that Twitter stands for. I would think some of them would notice this. It’s like they’re all waiting for someone else to make a decision for them.
@DavidSchwartz at least @auschwitzmuseum has moved over here. The other one can stay there
@DavidSchwartz disgusting. I am not sure why the media and / or others still post to that degenerate site. It and it’s owner need to be ignored, reviled, and rejected.
@DavidSchwartz This is absolutely horrifying
@DavidSchwartz At some point you realize that people actually live in the dystopian hellscape imagined by authors. For me, I think this moment is now. Elon Musk KNOWS. It's time to stop pretending he is clueless. He thrives on misinformation. Shame on him.

@shinyturtle @DavidSchwartz

The question of our time. I've known enough ppl like him and my guess is that he is completely stupid and incapable of logic, holding two completely opposite views at once, not realising why his entourage is hand wriggling at him, unable to foresee the big picture and conduct a reflection of more than two steps.

@DavidSchwartz Twitter owes us all more than $8 dollars for this single traumatic incident.

#ClassAction #IANAL

@DavidSchwartz so many carry these stories from the previous generations. Never forget who fascists are.
@DavidSchwartz Please always take the time to report Tweets like this. It is effective.

@DavidSchwartz Holy fuck, I've checked the account and it is a proper Nazi fest! Please, anyone in Germany still on Twitter: report the account, get the receipts and report it to the police.

And any journo who ever get asked "do you have any proof there's more hate on twitter" like this poor BBC guy, they should have a peek.

@DavidSchwartz "Protect The Children" only if they are White, Christian, Blonde, Blue Eyed, "Aryan"
@DavidSchwartz the question needs to stop being “why not pay the $8” and should become “why are you supporting this at all by using Twitter”? When you open the app, you bump the metrics Elon uses to get money from advertisers. Open the app, support this ecosystem.
@DavidSchwartz ok now riddle me this, how is TikTok a bigger threat than Twitter?
@DavidSchwartz
Ironically, the only way to verify Auschwitz on Twitter is now via their Mastodon account, which _is_ verified and links to their Twitter account.
@DavidSchwartz @nhan @catominor interesting persective of the blue or not which might be of interest
@DavidSchwartz one of the reasons why I left Twitter.
@DavidSchwartz
I'd say that sums up exactly why I left Twitter and came here even though I had 25,000 followers there. The stuff that kept bubbling up on my curated feed was upsetting (also Elon Musk keeps unblocking of my block)
@asymco
@DavidSchwartz How did we get to this in less than 90 years? I am weeping.
@DavidSchwartz That just makes me sick to my stomach. It's horrifying.

@DavidSchwartz Writing is as close to a profession as I get, but I can't convey 'I am at a loss for words' and give it the same impact I feel in my heart.

I'm happy I found my way to Mastodon, but watching the well get poisoned again and again over on Twitter is truly heartbreaking.

@DavidSchwartz The only way to stop Twitter is to leave it and let it sink.
@DavidSchwartz
I am getting pissed off at the people who don't take a stand. That dumpster fire needs to see such an exodus the building implodes

@DavidSchwartz Today in Brazil will be a vote in the national congress on the accountability of tech giants for the content published by their users.

Google, Meta, Twitter, etc. are making a massive campaign to influence people that this Law is harmful to them (them people, not them the tech giants...)
