#twittermigration

@tchambers @NewsDesk @Flipboard @habermas @JamesWNeal @notthatkaren @eschaton @madjo @lingon

There are several reports from users on @mstdn.social that they can not see these accounts. It has been suggested that @mstdn.social may be blocking @flipboard.social and this would explain it. However, https://mstdn.social/about does not list @flipboard.social in it's list of moderated servers.

Perhaps @mstdn.social admin @stux has the answer?

[Edit: Apparently already fixed. Great job everyone!]

Mastodon 🐘

A general-purpose Mastodon server with a 500 character limit. All languages are welcome.

Mastodon hosted on mstdn.social
@mastodonmigration @tchambers @NewsDesk @Flipboard @habermas @JamesWNeal @eschaton @madjo @lingon @stux Just re-tried and it works now. Thank you everyone for all your help and thank you @stux! One of the great things about Mastodon and the Fediverse is people working together and quick response/resolution.
@mastodonmigration @tchambers Added a couple to my follow list to try out. We'll see how they work out. Thanks.

@mastodonmigration @tchambers

i pasted the link and searched, but no results. much disappoint, will try again when i fully awaken.

@luckysitsinback @tchambers

Not your fault. It's the frustrating way Mastodon does addresses. Try pasting:

@NewsDesk
@TechDesk
@CultureDesk

@mastodonmigration @tchambers Wow, though ... it takes like four separate steps to follow any of those Flipboard accounts. That's kind of crazy.

@pwoodford @tchambers

Sorry about that. Added a clickable link that should take you to a page you can follow.

@mastodonmigration @tchambers Thanks! I was wondering why I can follow individuals on different servers with a single click, but not these accounts. This might be one of those fediverse bugaboos that's contributing to folks' fear of leaving Twitter for parts unknown.

@pwoodford @mastodonmigration

Remote account follows, and remote social engagement is one of those things the Mastodon developers KNOW they need to build better solutions for,. Needs to be seamless. Folks are working on it.

@tchambers @pwoodford @mastodonmigration Note that remote following from the target instance is in direct conflict with cross-site tracking/privacy prevention. The target instance doesn't know your handle (because that's protected cross-site info), and your home instance doesn't know the target. Apps can handle it because they can have state across sites. The browser plugins also keep cross-site info. There’s no good way to do it without apps or plugins.

@dgoldsmith @pwoodford @mastodonmigration

How about if in JavaScript the web site asked your home instance once - then was in clientside cookie so never needed to ask again?

From then on all links included your home server in thier links.

That would seem a secure but better experience?

@tchambers @pwoodford @mastodonmigration Each instance where you wanted to follow someone would have to ask once separately, which still isn't a great experience.

@dgoldsmith @pwoodford @mastodonmigration

Agreed: needs to be fixed at the protocol level. But till then….

@pwoodford @mastodonmigration @tchambers

We who are here first are the ones who understand the future of connectivity. Those who stay behind become slaves to the connectivity of yesterday

And I’ve only been here six months

But I also have institutional knowledge of this place - collaborative connectivity - from my years online in the 80s and 90s

@pwoodford @mastodonmigration @tchambers Was a simple click for me (in Tusky). How odd. I don't understand.
@mastodonmigration Thanks for the shoutout! Feedback welcome as we dive in here.

None of these come up for me. "resource could not be found"

@JamesWNeal @tchambers

This may indeed be one of the things about Mastodon that people complain about.

Because of (insert technical stuff here) if you are the first person from your instance to try the account it may not be on your instance. To fix this try searching for the account (eg. @NewsDesk). Just paste the "@[email protected]" (delete the "_") into your # Explore search box and hit return. Grrrrr You are right there has to be a better way.

@mastodonmigration @tchambers hmmm....I clicked on the link above- then copied the link provided at that page and pasted into Elk (mastodon web interface I am using)- and it didn't find anything. I also tried same thing with two Mastodon apps (Ice Cubes and Ivory) with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

@notthatkaren @tchambers Try: @[email protected], but delete the "_" and search for it.

This may be because it is not cached yet on your local instance. And, you are right this is frustrating!

@mastodonmigration @tchambers Thanks for the help- but this does not seem to work either for me? It still doesn't find anything.
@notthatkaren @mastodonmigration @tchambers mstdn.social has blocked the Flipboard domain.
@blake @tchambers @mastodonmigration @notthatkaren Yep. This is the cause apparently. I'm on mstdn.social also. This is ..... concerning?
@blake @tchambers @mastodonmigration Oh.....well that definitely explains why I couldn't get it to work no matter what I tried. I wonder why it's blocked? It might be nice if Mastodon had some notification that you were trying to access a domain/server that your server had blocked rather than just having the search not find anything- to save the frustration (wrongly directed at Mastodon or the Fediverse) about things not working and wasting time trying to find solutions.
@mastodonmigration @tchambers @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Same for me, copy pasting the links finds nothing and solution offered don't help either. It is frustrating when you hit these roadblocks with mastodon...

@mastodonmigration @tchambers @NewsDesk @TechDesk @CultureDesk @Flipboard

I hope your culture account will consider featuring Independently published authors. We need more visibility.

@HLGEM @Flipboard Hi! Yes, we are absolutely keen to feature and amplify all sorts of different voices. Looking forward to hearing what the community is interested in.

@mastodonmigration @tchambers @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

I not only unfollowed these accounts, but cancelled my paid subscription to Flipboard and deleted the app from my phone,

Clickbait, lies, foolishness is not what I want. It seems like if you are paying, there would be less of that bullshit, but not in this case.

So proceed with caution. Just because they now have a fediverse connection does not mean they won't pump more crap into your TL.

@cassandracorvid @mastodonmigration @tchambers Hi Mrs Raven, You may have us confused with another service. We don't have a paid subscription and we work very hard to ensure only high quality sources, large and small, local, national and global are included in feeds. We actively weed out any type of clickbait and specifically block known accounts and domains that promote hate, conspiracy theories and the like. It's not perfect but our feeds are far better than any other social platform IMO.
@mastodonmigration @tchambers @NewsDesk @TechDesk @CultureDesk @Flipboard This certainly seems worth a try. Saw at least one CWd post. Wish there was something like this for UK news…
@mastodonmigration @tchambers @Flipboard @estheria Oh, perfect. When people consider news orgs setting up shop in ActivityPub, this is exactly the right model. It’s not about hosting the writers’ accounts (which could be fine, too, but there’s plenty of reasons writers might not like it); we want the *editorial* and *publishing* functions. Let me follow the beat/desk/section at WaPo or whatever, just like this.

@mastodonmigration If people are wondering why its blocked on their instance, this might be why: https://equestria.social/@[email protected]cial/109997499716726440

I'm starting to find too many accounts or instances inexplicably blocked, and its impacting on my experience of the Fediverse. Maybe it's time to find a slightly less trigger-happy instance.

If only it was immediately visible which instances are doing the most fediblocking and why.
