After Radio New Zealand was labeled by #Twitter as "government-funded media," the broadcaster's head of content, Megan Whelan, says: "Over the next few days, we will be considering our options, including talking to Twitter to have the label removed or revised, or as other public media around the world have done, leave the platform."
@w7voa A lot of organisations who have built up dependency upon Twitter output are going to have to face this problem. It really is quite easy: leave Twitter!
@w7voa @Hey_Beth What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.
@w7voa So shouldn’t NYT, WaPo, Twitter and other media owned by billionaires have a label “billionaire/plutocrat-funded media”.

@LeonardoDiOttio @w7voa Yes, just like that 👍

Oh I forgot to add Fox Faux News and WSJ. Did I forget any others.

@w7voa @atomicpoet Ah, so now is probably the right time for us in #NZ to pressure #RNZ to join the Fediverse.
@w7voa Isn't Elon/Twitter effectively
"Saudi government affiliated media"
these days?
Can't be that expensive to media companies to set up a server/instance of their own and get clear of the twit.
Finally, hope they leave that toxic platform
@w7voa ...also worth noting that when RNZ reached out to Twitter they received a poo emoji in response (ref: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/488136/rnz-considers-unliking-twitter-over-government-funded-label)
RNZ considers unliking Twitter over 'government-funded' label

The sticking point is Twitter's suggestion the broadcaster "may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content".

RNZ
@w7voa They simply need to set up their own Mastodon server and be done with Twitter: If Twitter had their wits about them they'd find a way to allow Twitter users to find and follow Mastodon accounts... but something tells me they won't...
@w7voa Bit by bit, Twitter is draining away its usefulness as a powerful news aggregator. That's what Musk wants, that's what he'll get.

@w7voa I have to say, I feel like CBC and RNZ have weaker cases against the label than NPR or PBS. Both CBC and RNZ are Crown Corporations, which puts it in the same category as the USPS or VA. They are wholly owned by their governments.

Whether their journalistic practices are effectively independent or not is another matter entirely. I imagine there have likely been accusations of jingoism towards both, just as with the BBC. It's presumed one doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds you.
