Boggles the mind that in 2023 Canada doesn't have frequent high-speed electric rail from #Quebec City to #Windsor. 50% of Canada's population is in the red zone below.

People fly and drive instead. Such low-hanging fruit, but no government grasps it.

🧡

High-speed rail in the US Midwest, which has a similar population density as #Spain, would replace short-haul flights, and go a long way to reducing carbon emissions.

Should be a no-brainer for Amtrak Joe Bidenβ€”you'd think, anyway... (Fantasy map below)

In Europe, I go everywhere on high-speed electric trains.

In Canada and the US, I'm stuck on slow, late-running diesel trains.

I explore this sad situationβ€”and offer hope for the futureβ€”in my latest Straphanger dispatch

Rail Fail

North America's passenger trains, once world-beaters, have become global laughing stocks.

Straphanger, from Taras Grescoe
This nice visualization of Canada's population from @terence
@straphanger @terence Fun graphic but a few strange things. Why the curved lined into Montreal and Quebec? Chose to label Thunder Bay but not Sydney nor Grande Prairie.
@straphanger @terence
There were a few surprises where I thought, "What is that place?!". Turns out I should really dust my laptop screen.
@straphanger It's the tracks. They don't belong in private (greedy) hands. Amtrak recently withdrew from a deal to rent trackage rights for another service in/out New Orleans because the rundown tracks in the hands of the Southern freight barons aren't certifiable for passenger rail.

@straphanger density overall may be similar on a large scale, but the character of the density on smaller scales could not be more different.

Spain is the most urbanized large country in Europe. The US midwest... is not that.

I fear that without density around these stations, and attendant public transit networks radiating out from them in each city, these lines would not be well used.

@straphanger

I want a concerted effort to put double track high quality concrete tie railroad track in every interstate highway that can accommodate it. Single track if 2 wont fit, with passing tracks where possible. Consider taking away centermost traffic lanes from some overbuilt ones. When we built expressways companies built trucks & hired long haul drivers. If we build railways with high speed container trains companies will ship faster & cheaper & hire local pickup/delivery drivers.

@straphanger do that and Amtrak can run a few short very fast trains on top quality track. Private railroads can continue hauling grain, ore lumber, etc.
