According to the folklore of Aargau, people who die because of their own recklessness have to spend as many years as a ghost on Earth as they would have lived under ordinary circumstances.

When a young man drowned in a pond well known for local flash floods, it was divined that he would have lived for 70 years. Thus, the locals built a small shelter for the ghost so that he would be protected from the elements.

"For if a ghost does not have a roof over their head, they will seek one out."
