Advocates of “Green Growth” promise a painless transition to a post-carbon future. But what if the limits of renewable energy require sacrificing consumption as a way of life?

A must-read about the impossibility of green growth and #degrowth as the only viable option forward:

What if the limits of renewable energy require sacrificing consumption?

@ChristianeKliemann That was a really interesting read, thanks for linking to it.

We're doomed, basically, aren't we?! Is there any way to turn around that political dependence on 'growth' being the only thing that counts as success? How can we make #degrowth fashionable enough to bring about lasting change? 🤔

@stephaniejne

Managed Degrowth is a matter of survival, not a fashion someone might want to adopt or not.
Show the normal citizens in those countries which have and had most influence on the current global polit-econ system that their own survival is at stake.
Prof Rahmstorf is age 61 or something. HE sees his own peaceful and orderly retirement age in Germany (!) at stake due to a likely turn for the worse from the clusterfuck of climate disasters and their clusterfucked impact on human systems.

Tell the citizens of EU, USA and some other regions what they're in for if we do not do managed #degrowth.
Then they'll realise how bad its going to get. And then, degrowth is no longer a question of "convincing" a majority but a logical next step.
@ChristianeKliemann

@anlomedad @ChristianeKliemann I know it's a matter of survival, but until it becomes 'fashionable' I can't see how anywhere near enough people are going to adopt its practices.
Telling people how bad it's going to get is already happening, but without a significant enough effect. Rich nations feel their wealth will somehow shelter them forever. I feel we need to appeal to these populations by not just stating facts, but capturing their imaginations on the positive possibilities of #degrowth
@stephaniejne I refuse thinking that we are doomed, as the future is always unknown and depends on what we do today. I try to do my best to work toward something called "social tipping points" which might create support for degrowth-based policies
@ChristianeKliemann It's a question of how to push towards these social tipping points fast enough though.
