"Let’s say you’re locked in a heated geopolitical spat with a few of your online friends in a small chatroom, and you happen to be privy to some classified documents that could back up your argument. While it’s tempting to snap a photo and share it to prove your point, especially given the appeal of impressing onlookers and instantly placating naysayers, it would behoove you to take a step back and think through the potential repercussions. Even though you may only plan for the documents to be shared among your small group of 20 or so friends, you should assume that copies may trickle out, and in a few weeks, those very same documents could appear on the front pages of international news sites. Thinking of this as an inevitability instead of a remote prospect may help protect you in the face of an ensuing federal investigation." https://theintercept.com/2023/04/12/classified-documents-leak/

I still can't believe this actually needs to be said...

I think my favorite example of stuff being leaked this way was that one where the capabilities of a chinese tank was leaked on the world of tanks forum because the guy didn't like how the tank was less powerful ingame than in real life, so he released classified documents. I could have the details of that instance slightly wrong, but either way it is a funny story.

@zbecker @micahflee Is it a tank, or an anti-tank weapon? Or it is just another leak?🤔

War thunder forum has had these leaks from time to time, all in the same pattern: heated discussion, then someone post confidential docs just to prove they're right. Oh crap

Chinese military secrets leaked on a video game forum

Classified specifications for a Chinese anti-tank weapon leaked online in the War Thunder forums. This is the third high-profile leak of classified intelligence in the free-to-play simulation game in the last several years.

That sounds about right. I mix up warthunder, world of tanks and world of battleships all the time. I don't play any of them.
