"Let’s say you’re locked in a heated geopolitical spat with a few of your online friends in a small chatroom, and you happen to be privy to some classified documents that could back up your argument. While it’s tempting to snap a photo and share it to prove your point, especially given the appeal of impressing onlookers and instantly placating naysayers, it would behoove you to take a step back and think through the potential repercussions. Even though you may only plan for the documents to be shared among your small group of 20 or so friends, you should assume that copies may trickle out, and in a few weeks, those very same documents could appear on the front pages of international news sites. Thinking of this as an inevitability instead of a remote prospect may help protect you in the face of an ensuing federal investigation." https://theintercept.com/2023/04/12/classified-documents-leak/
What to Do Before Sharing Classified Documents With Your Friends Online

While it’s tempting to share a photo to prove your point, you ought to think through the potential repercussions.

The law of unintended consequences... If it goes on the net, it's public, because.. just because.
@micahflee
seriously, I didn't mean that. ..
I meant the corollary to the law of unintended consequences.. Ok, the law of Oops.
Not to be confused with murphy'slaw, which is tasty with a vinegar dressing.
@micahflee Parents have been doling out this kind of message to their kids for several decades as it relates to posting things online. You’d think “classified documents” would be a given as items to not post.

@micahflee

I still can't believe this actually needs to be said...

I think my favorite example of stuff being leaked this way was that one where the capabilities of a chinese tank was leaked on the world of tanks forum because the guy didn't like how the tank was less powerful ingame than in real life, so he released classified documents. I could have the details of that instance slightly wrong, but either way it is a funny story.

@zbecker @micahflee Is it a tank, or an anti-tank weapon? Or it is just another leak?🤔

War thunder forum has had these leaks from time to time, all in the same pattern: heated discussion, then someone post confidential docs just to prove they're right. Oh crap

Chinese military secrets leaked on a video game forum

Classified specifications for a Chinese anti-tank weapon leaked online in the War Thunder forums. This is the third high-profile leak of classified intelligence in the free-to-play simulation game in the last several years.

@Orca @micahflee

That sounds about right. I mix up warthunder, world of tanks and world of battleships all the time. I don't play any of them.

@micahflee I"d probably share classified documents to the world anonymously long before any discussions, too much damn secrecy.

And before anyone conflates this with personal privacy, they're not the same thing, my tentacle kink does not affect the world.

@micahflee Well tutored. Next, he should explain in equally clear terms, how masturbating with an AC wall outlet can have unexpected health and wellness issues.

This is how "undo" works with tweets and emails.

Men don't have fully developed brains into mid twenties so?? Especially christofascists, we're not sure if they ever get fully developed brains.

@micahflee lmao, what is this article?
@micahflee You would think they would mention this sort of stuff before giving him top secret security clearance? In any case giving over a million people access to secrets is going to inevitably have consequences. Like, you have no secrets. Doh!
