O'Reilly Radar gave the Fediverse a shout-out!

They note that the Fediverse is on pace to match Twitter's scale.

But they also question whether the industry pundits will ever take the Fediverse seriously since it lacks billionaire or VC funding.

Fine by me.

Let the pundits write their long thinkpieces on NFTs and AI and all the other bullshit that powers tech hype cycles.

As for me, I'm here for actual and tangible technological change.

Not Forgotten

ChatGPT isn’t the only important trend in technology.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Is it even desirable to be “taken seriously” by pundits? Their entire value seems to rest in amplifying their own importance. It’s more noise than value.
@philip @atomicpoet @fediversenews Yes, it is. A lot comes with it. Stuff like NASA/ESA, key companies, key services, various reasons for why people used Twitter in the first place that don't yet exist on Mastodon.

@MarcinW @atomicpoet @fediversenews Do those things really appear because of pundits, or do they appear because it becomes undeniable that there’s value in being where people are?

I think it’s rather the latter than the former. But I could of course be mistaken.

@philip @MarcinW @atomicpoet @fediversenews As someone who has been associated with a NASA account, the utilitarian view is certainly the most accurate. Government communications people aren't really plugged into the VC scene, but they will listen when you say that something will increase your reach

@simonbp @philip @atomicpoet @fediversenews It's really not.
I'm not talking about the the VC scene, but rather the pundits themselves.
There are barely any official accounts on Mastodon (with European Union being a huge pioneer here, joining before any of the Twitter waves came in), despite of Mastodon having over 10mln users and continually growing.

So it's clearly not the lack of reach potential that is an issue here.
