The East Coast Main Line being down that week made for some interesting journeys. To get from London to Darlington I took an East Midlands Railway Class 222 DMU to Cross Country Class 221 DMU. The two are related, and increasingly showing their age. Comfortable, but with tiny useless overhead shelves.

Getting into my UK trip in May, an Elizabeth Line Class 345 and a Thameslink Class 700. It's funny to contrast the two, as they serve basically the same purpose in perpendicular directions, but the Purple Train still has a sheen of newness to it.

Interesting trains what I rode in 2025:

Trams of Houston, March. Houston's light rail network is tiny, and goes through a city that is downright hostile to pedestrians, but still provides a core of what could eventually become a useful network.

"Earthrise" - captured on Dec. 24, 1968 by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders.

Astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first humans to orbit the Moon and the first to witness the awe-inspiring sight.

50 years later, Anders observed - "We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth."

Wilderness photographer Galen Rowell called Earthrise "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken."

What are your thoughts?

"New research, led by NASA Ames scientist Alejandro Borlaff, expects that by 2040, about 40 percent of all images from the #Hubble telescope will be contaminated by internet satellite constellations. The value is even higher, reaching 96 percent, for new and upcoming telescopes."

Light pollution from satellites affects more than just the Earth.

Not that the new is bad; a pair of United pilots playing the theme to Game of Thrones is certainly new to me

It is perhaps worth remembering that in the 1980s Ronald Reagan also liked the idea of using the Navy as a dick for him to swing around, so the Navy obligingly dragged four World War II battleships out of mothballs and back into active service, a move that accomplished very little except burning $3 billion in refitting costs and killing 47 sailors when one of USS Iowa’s ancient turrets blew up

Korean commercial launch company Innospace had the first liftoff of their Hanbit-Nano rocket last night. It cleared the tower, but during the first stage burn it crashed and exploded.

The first stage is a hybrid motor, meaning it uses liquid oxygen like most rockets but solid paraffin wax as the fuel. Hybrids are generally terrible for a variety of reasons for which I could go on about at length. Australia also has a hybrid launcher that failed this year.

Oh wow, this was at the airport next door to me. It's not apparent in the flight tracker graphic, but that approach is over dense housing and offices (including the BAE ex-Ball Aerospace complex). So this system saved not only the people on the plane, but also anyone in a building they could've hit.

Garmin “Autoland” aka “Safe Return,” has been used for the first time, successfully. Autoland is an emergency system, where a passenger can hit a big red button if the pilot is in incapacitated, which causes the airplane to make emergency radio calls, navigate to a nearby airport with a long runway and medical facilities, and conduct an instrument approach and landing, followed by a full shutdown when the aircraft comes to a stop on the runway. Large screens and voice announcements keep passengers updated along the way. The nature of the medical emergency on Saturday, involving a King Air with an unconscious pilot, has not been disclosed. https://avbrief.com/autoland-saves-king-air-everyone-reported-safe/ #avgeek
