Will the "government funded" label also apply to Tesla and SpaceX?
@juddlegum
I thought that a tiny fraction of NPR's budget came from the government. So what's his play here?
@Steverino @juddlegum being an asshole
@overunderclover @Steverino @juddlegum NPR isn't kissing Musk's ass and falling in line with his right-wing bullshit, so he's punishing them.
@Steverino @juddlegum The same as before, throwing discredit and tending to libertarians and conspiracists

@Steverino @juddlegum

Fascists seek to control the dissemination of information and convert media organizations into propaganda platforms.

Musk, his Saudi financiers, and MorganStanley are gearing up for 2024 to be the last real American election.

All publicly funded news organizations are under attack.

VOA. NPR. PBS. CBC. BBC. ABC.

Musk suspended VOA reporters 1st.

Now it's NPR's turn.

Musk Restores Suspended Twitter Accounts for Some Journalists

UN: Suspension ‘Sets A Dangerous Precedent’

Voice of America (VOA News)
@Npars01 @Steverino @juddlegum Yep, and still "good people" are sticking with Twitter because they still occasionally get what they want out of it. Or what they used to have. If they're not going to fight or leave, I don't know why we would still treat them as credible.
@juddlegum Musk's ass is practically public property
@juddlegum In all seriousness - what business *can't* be called "government funded"? The government buys everything - toothpaste, laundry detergent, cars & trucks, etc. Elon just keeps stepping on rakes....
@keithnowak @juddlegum turns out all capitalism is state capitalism
@juddlegum No surprise coming from Musk, that anti-government asshole.
@juddlegum & foreign funded, his companies have been partially funded by Russia, Saudi Arabia & others & Musk, in many instances, supports Russia, Saudi Arabia, China... over American interests.

@juddlegum

Exactly!

Musk loves taking $ from US taxpayers.
But god forbid he’s asked to pay his share.

@juddlegum The thing is that for an news organization the designation could be defamatory. It attacks their perceived credibility which is their service and product.
It would be like a car company being labeled “Meets 1932 safety standards.”
My bet is that this might be actionable.
@muzikant @juddlegum except that it’s a definition Twitter invented and they can change it at any time:
@theothersimo @juddlegum Pretty sure I’ve heard the words “government funded” before Twitter.
@muzikant @juddlegum well in the colloquial sense there’s no question that NPR is government funded.
@theothersimo @juddlegum just like Tesla? And every corporation?
@theothersimo @juddlegum But as I mentioned earlier, the implication is worse for a news organization than the other corporations that receive government funds and benefits. To be labeled “government funded” is intentionally trying to tie their coverage to the will of a State. In essence, it’s ok for Tesla to be known for receiving government money. But a news org is being called “state propaganda.”
@juddlegum Shouldn't elon get a "Russian state media" label? considering how much he's just putin's mouth piece.

@juddlegum #ALT4you Bobby Allyn (@[email protected])

NEW: Label on NPR's main account changed to "government funded," and Elon tells me Twitter is "applying it to a larger number of institutions."

@juddlegum When's Elon adding "Saudi Funded" to his account?
@juddlegum I'm weirdly ok with my tax money going towards renewable energy and reducing the cost of access to space. Certainly better than it going to literal death and destruction companies and waging endless wars and killing children.
@juddlegum I just saw it pointed out that Musk's Twitter purchase was government-affiliated — the government of Saudi Arabia.
@juddlegum @wildwoila what an outage. Another reason to leave Twitter behind. As if this label is for any reason other than to sow distrust
@juddlegum
NPR should ditch Twitter immediately as should every other legitimate news organization.
@juddlegum very few have taken more from the government than Elon, recall what trump said about him😂
@juddlegum I can mention that at the shareholders' meeting on May 15. #Proposal5
@juddlegum The "government funded" label links back to the "government and state-affiliated media account labels" explanation page (which has not been updated and contains no references to the label in question). So this seems to apply to media orgs, would not apply to Tesla/SpaceX.
Not that there is any real logic or consistency to be found here.

Government and state-affiliated media account labels

Twitter places labels on state-affiliated media accounts to provide additional context to their content. Learn why and how.

@juddlegum

Tesla has received $1.6 billion in subsidies from the State of Nevada to build a battery manufacturing facility

@juddlegum

Tesla received $465M of government funding. 3 to 4 times what Musk put in. (Musk didn't start Tesla).

Tesla received more government funds than NPR.

@juddlegum lol! Of course not! Elon is a free speech absolutist… oh wait… no he is not. But, but Space X and Tesla never accepted Government money… oh… wait… they did.

Also don’t forget that Elon is trying to make self driving “AI” powered cars but he thinks AI will take over the world?

Ugh… the hypocrisy is astounding.

@D1g1talDrag0n @juddlegum @chadloder , do you think Musk is a free speech absolutist...
@juddlegum
Indeed, manu people forget this. According to [1], Tesla and SpaceX, also controlled by Musk, have received nearly $5 billion in government aid over the years. Tesla's total subsidy value according to the data is $2.44 billion, across 109 “awards” — 82 federal grants and tax credits as well as 27 state and local awards[2].

Tesla reveals it got coronavirus bailout as Musk blasts stimulus package

Earlier this month, the billionaire said the government should only do direct stimulus payments to citizens because of "special interests."

@juddlegum Again, do all the Russians boosted now on the bitcoin site get any label? Or the Chinese? https://www.semafor.com/article/04/05/2023/twitter-falls-short-in-policing-russian-and-chinese-state-backed-media
Twitter is no longer policing Russian and Chinese state-backed media | Semafor

The social media site appears to no longer be enforcing its own policies designed to limit the influence of government propaganda.

@juddlegum
@JamesGleick

In early 2024, Twitter changes label from "government-funded" to "is a poopie-head". This label is automatically applied algorithmically by software looking at Elon Musk's facial expression as he browses the postings.

@juddlegum Would this be a good time to ask the federal government to fund NPR & PBS a bit more?
@juddlegum pretty sure SpaceX gets a higher % of federal dollars than NPR!
