There's not a doubt in my mind that if Mr. Rogers had known about trans kids, he would have invited them onto his show, shown them love, and taught a lesson to all of his viewers about pronouns.
@JessTheUnstill ❤️❤️❤️❤️

@JessTheUnstill

He had a hard time with the gays, at first, but he came around.

@JessTheUnstill We will never truly deserve Mr. Rogers, or to live in his neighborhood, but we must always strive to be people who might.
@JessTheUnstill @mwl meanwhile in the UK, our next Political leader thinks ‘nobody talks about trans issues’, even though they are being used as ammunition by a fleeing Tory government. Mr.Rogers, we miss you.
@JessTheUnstill Heck, he'd have had Daniel Tiger transition, if he thought it would help.

@JessTheUnstill 1000%

That man was... just astounding. Far too few politicians watched him as children. :(

@JessTheUnstill

Absofreakinglutey. In a heartbeat.

@JessTheUnstill I knew his wife Joanne.

This is absolutely true. Fred and Joanne both would have found a way to send a message of love and acceptance to the trans community and a message to the rest of us about accepting each person for the unique individual they represent in this world. He also would have given us encouragement to allow ourselves to be our authentic selves as we see it from inside our own heart.

@Magooish @JessTheUnstill That just sounds like him 💖💖🥲😢

@JessTheUnstill It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood when we all welcome each other as neighbors.

I grew up in a small prairie town and I remember being uncomfortable with non-hetero people. It didn't take me long to accept others, but it took years to face my internalized homophobia and accept myself!

@JessTheUnstill Considering he had a gay cast member that he supported his whole life, I fully agree. If the show had gone on longer they probably would have even addressed it (I'm not surprised they didn't in the 90s or earlier ofc).

@JessTheUnstill I didn’t realize I needed Mr. Rogers in this moment. 😭

Of course, I could see a segment about him showing up on conservative news: “Mister Rogers moved to a ‘Woke’ Neighborhood‽”

@helianthropy @JessTheUnstill They've done that before. They used to routinely kick Mr. Rogers for teaching kids they're special just the way they are.

Did 'Fox and Friends' Call Fred Rogers an 'Evil, Evil Man'?

The segment prompted numerous rebuttals condemning the "maliciousness of the attack" on the legacy of the children's TV host.

@roadriverrail @JessTheUnstill Oh, snap!

<insert shocked Pikachu>

@JessTheUnstill @Verso Very yes. I liked this video from a little bit ago:

And I think “do you think Mister Rogers would be proud of what you’re doing” is hella good framing.

@JessTheUnstill
I agree.
That would definitely have been a Fred Rogers thing to do.
@JessTheUnstill Will Daniel Tiger, and his production team?

@JessTheUnstill I absolutely have no doubt. In fact, IIRC, when he learned about trans & nonbinary people, he updated one of his songs to be more inclusive, because he didn't want *any* children to feel left out.

Bigots use the original version as "proof" he was on "their" side, but ignore that he later updated the song when he learned he was unintentionally excluding people.

Just like inviting the black postman into his kiddy pool, he led by example. We need more like him.

@JessTheUnstill I am very curious about the they/them character he would have had.

I feel like he would have gone with someone who hasn't decided yet if they are a puppet, but nonbinary if they were an actor. He would certainly have had one as a character.

@JessTheUnstill

I'd like to think so, but there were trans then, sooooo...

@JessTheUnstill from what I've heard about him, absolutely. he seems like a real humanist.

@JessTheUnstill Man, when I was a kid I couldn't stand his show. In part because it felt too much like he was talking down to me.

It's now, as an adult, I really appreciate what he was doing.

And you're absolutely right. He would have.

@JessTheUnstill
Agreed.
Like he had an African American man join him in his wading pool

@JessTheUnstill @stubbornella Just the thought of that makes me a little emotional.

We miss you Fred Rogers.
