Yes, @Gargron has made strong statements about that in his Verge interview, and it is on the public roadmap for Mastodon being explored actively...

@mmasnick @caseynewton @darth I don’t believe it’s technically on the roadmap, the exploring section is more “under consideration” than finalized. I do hope it’s coming though, I had a call with Eugen a few months ago about the idealized implementation of quotes I’d put design based on everything I learned about quotes from our research and experience at Twitter. https://www.craft.do/s/9wIvAMSO63sMXx

The only problem with this is that having it implemented by the app means it also may only be supported for viewing by the app. Having it built into Mastodon standardizes how it’s handled and presented.

IIRC The Ice Cubes approach is just a different handling of link previews for Mastodon links.

@hybridhavoc True, the downside is it will not look good to all users. But more and more apps are implementing it, so I don’t think we have to wait for an official implementation before it can be useful.
