My trick tomorrow is figuring out how to connect 3 external monitors (2x4k and 1x1080) to my work laptop (lenovo t490). So far, I can get any two to work, but not 3
@jerry a good dock? 😎
@robspodcastmug I’ve not found one - there’s several out there, but they all appear to require drivers that tend to be problematic with employer-provided computers.
@jerry hdmi plug, Thunderbolt to display port to a display port splitter?

@rallias I have a usb c multi-function adapter with two 4k HDMI ports. I can use both of those with no issue. If I plug a monitor into the built in hdmi port on the side of the laptop, one of the other monitors disappears from Windows’ awareness. (This is with the display closed, so not also hosting that display)

I am trying a usb 3 to 1080 adapter tomorrow and hoping it works

@jerry @rallias do you have multiple USB c ports? Perhaps on both sides of the laptop? My MacBook has this issue where you can use 4 external displays, but you need to put two on each side of the laptop
@jerry I don’t believe this is supported on T490 (except if you close lid to turn off internal display?) https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T490/ThinkPad_T490_Spec.PDF
This horrible monster also lists display compatibility irrespective of the actual dock being used, ignore that part. You just want to select USB or TB connection. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd029622-display-and-video-output-configurations-docking-stations

@jerry probably not possible; limit of 3 displays on 8th gen Intel IGPs. See https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/126686/intel-core-i78700-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz/specifications.html

(Unless you turn off laptop internal display if that’s possible)

This is exactly what I was coming here to post. Most laptops can only support up to 3 monitors - including the built in display. If you want three external monitors to work, you'll need to close the lid.

@jerry lots of good comments. From your machine (I presume), the spec advise 2 ext displays at upto 4k, with or without the built in display. The options for the port are determined by what is electrically connected to the chipsets\cpu. It looks like on your machine the external path is hard limited to two.

Using a USB3 to video adapter *should* get you the third screen, you'll be pulling bandwidth and such from a different part of the system.

Good luck! 🤞

@jerry likely not supported by the hardware. Only option in that case is to use a displaylink adapter for the third display.
What it does is create a virtual display that's then fed over usb to a dock that can then output to a real display. Its not fast and eats up cpu resources so stick to the 1080p display on it
@jerry https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd029622-display-and-video-output-configurations-docking-stations lists possible combinations. Rest is either laptop or dock limitations.
You can also get USB display adapter (e.g. JUA354) but that is rather laggy for other than simple graphics/text.

@aketzu this is extremely helpful. Thank you
@jerry does the laptop has a display port? I use a display port splitter from star tech and it does the trick. But only full HD. No drivers required.

@jerry

Are you also using the Thunderbolt/ USC C port as a display output? 🤔🤷‍♂️

@simonzerafa I have two monitors on the Thunderbolt port. When I try to add a third is the problem

@jerry

So much confusion in the T490 documentation and lots of snark in the forum 🙄

Looks like you can have two monitors on the USB C / Thunderbolt port and another on the separate external video out.

You might need to get to the UEFI configuration to enable that external video port if you have a dock connected though 🫤🤷‍♂️

@simonzerafa I was able to get it working - see here: https://infosec.exchange/@jerry/110134704579015467

Attached: 2 images Ok. The USB 3.0 to hdmi adapter did the trick. I have two 4k monitors and a 1080 teleprompter working. Laptop lid has to be closed, but I’m putting the laptop on a separate stand away from the desk anyhow. It’s still a disaster area of cords, but it’s getting there

@jerry

Yep, I saw your posting 🙂👍

@jerry If you solve it, I would be interested in knowing the solution.
@Holir_ I just got it to work using a usb c dock with two hdmi ports and a separate usb 3.0 to hdmi adapter.
@jerry DisplayLink adapters will work but are slower and use more CPU. I eventually bought an external GPU (Sonnet breakaway puck) on eBay. Works great as long as I start the computer with it attached and stop the device prior to unplugging it.
