NEW: “I’m sorry to break it to anyone who has trouble keeping their car out of a bike lane (or off a concrete barrier), but it’s not the bike lane’s fault you’re a shitty driver. If you hit something stationary, that’s your fault. Pay attention to the fucking road while you’re driving. It’s not too much to ask when other people’s lives are literally at stake.”

Harsh but true.

It's Not the Bike Lane's Fault You're a Bad Driver

Instead of complaining about bike lanes, try paying attention while you're driving.

@BrentToderian while it's true in some cases, I'm not sure that was terribly helpful. Slagging off drivers who aren't reading the article just to make cyclists feel better doesn't really add anything to the equation. Or did I miss something?
@zorrobandito @BrentToderian I think there's some significance in it coming from a motoring site rather than a cycling site or active travel advocacy group.
@justNickoli @BrentToderian yes, your right. I didn't know that and made the assumption that because of the vitriol, that it was a bike site. My bad.
@zorrobandito @BrentToderian I’m not sure I’m following. In what case is it not true?
@fbaum @BrentToderian I was only acknowledging the core of the article - that *some* people can't keep their car in the lane.
@zorrobandito @BrentToderian note the source there - that's a car website
@BrentToderian When I see damaged street “furniture”, not least cycle lane markers and signage, I always think of the fact that motorists consistently rate their driving as better than average.

@BrentToderian true...

Can we also make a B-line for the d-heads that use disabled parking for no valid reason!?

@BrentToderian Studies show that bike lanes are safest when they’re physically divided from the street by barriers that cars can’t easily cross. That’s largely because most American drivers simply aren’t used to driving on streets with bike lanes, and therefore don’t readily recognize them. I wish we had bike lanes everywhere.
@BrentToderian Additionally, many drivers’ education courses (especially for older drivers from rural states) never mentioned bicycles as something to watch for. They are easy to overlook for folks only scanning their mirrors for big cars and trucks.
