I’m looking for a #Mastodon client that lets my timeline begin where I left off, even when it’s two days in the past. I want then to slowly and chronologically work my way up to “now”, and the client would fill the gaps as I read, without layout-shifting current toots in the viewport when newer toots lazy-load above. Web-based (preferred) or iOS. I essentially want what Echofon provided for Twitter. Mammoth is close, but not perfect. Elk is reverse-chronological. Suggestions? Thanks!
To close the loop on this question: for now, Ice Cubes for Mastodon is my client of choice: https://apps.apple.com/app/ice-cubes-for-mastodon/id6444915884?l=en. It starts where I left off and then lets me scroll my way up. It also doesn’t seem to jump and has a decent account chooser in the compose view. It’s also open-source: https://github.com/Dimillian/IceCubesApp. Thanks all for your tips!

I changed the icon to a cute rainbow one with a stylized ice cube. Oh, and I just discovered an option to hide boosts I had already seen, which is a killer feature when I look at my timeline. Thanks, @dimillian!
@tomayac That sounds like my feature wish list! Unfortunate it doesn't seem as though it will come to other platforms soon 😞
@tomayac The feature I’m most intrigued about in it is the AI driven hashtag suggestions :)

@tomayac the native web app, with Slow Mode turned on in the settings?

Otherwise I'm fairly sure @sarah11918 (was it you?) had some preferred apps...

Aha here's the post I was thinking of:
https://mastodon.social/@sarah11918/110005884690581093

@sarajw @sarah11918 Thank you! Sarah's post points at an Android app, though. I don't like the side navigation layout of the native web app to be honest. I know, it's me.

@tomayac @sarah11918

Fair enough - and I totally get it, I would like the sidebar gone too...

@tomayac @sarajw For a web app, it's still working some stuff out, but you could also check out Mastodeck (modelled on TweetDeck, if you liked that setup.) It's not yet exactly what I'd like it to be, but it has promise. So, one to keep your eye on!
@tomayac @sarajw But yeah, to get that sweet, sweet hold your place comfort... my Android app is going to be hard to beat. They already have it mastered in their existing Twitter app. I use it for all timeline/list kind of reading, and Mastodeck the way I used Tweetdeck: mostly for saved searches (can't wait until I can CLEAR columns, like TD) and other columns for quick, up-to-the-minute viewing.
@sarah11918 @sarajw Thank you! Since Mastodon doesn't do keyword searches, many of my TweetDeck columns that were based on those don't translate over. I keep searching… 😀

@tomayac @sarajw Right, I feel that. My Twitter searches were so elaborate, combining user names and keywords with false-positive exclusions.... RIP my beloved search hacks!

So my searching on Mastodon is hashtag-based, which was near impossible to do volume-wise on Twitter itself. But since you can't ever see all the posts anyway, hashtag searching here is quite reasonable.

@tomayac I love @ivory, it matches your expectations
@nhoizey @ivory Thank you! I like Ivory, but am turned down a bit by the subscription model (I know, this is an unpopular opinion).

@tomayac I like being able to contribute to @ivory development with this subscription, I've been paying for Tweetbot for years.

I don't know if it's popular or not. 😅

@tomayac @nhoizey Considering the amount of hate they got every time they launched a new paid Tweetbot version I can really understand why they moved to a subscription service, and since they have a yearly subscription one can skip auto-renewal and simply treat it as buying a new license per year manually
@voxpelli @nhoizey I guess I'm really just old-fashioned to be honest. I like paying for software once, and then use it for years. It may well cost a lot upfront and I am happy to pay for good software, but I hate being forced to keep track of subscriptions.

@tomayac @nhoizey I guess one in a way should consider an app like Ivory as a browser that instead of HTML reads and renders the Mastodon web and as such needs to stay as evergreen as any other browser to keep working with the network and as such be something where it makes sense to have a subscription.

As for other apps, if they are available through SetApp I use them through SetApp as then I have a single subscription for them all, which is simpler for me and simpler for them.

@tomayac Ivory on iOS does this (reverse chron but remembers your position with no layout shift). https://semaphore.social is the closest I’ve seen on web and is what I use on desktop.

@kylealden Thank you! I like Ivory, but am turned down a bit by the subscription model (I know, this is an unpopular opinion). Semaphore doesn't seem to support push notifications I think.

@tomayac Looks like it's pretty top priority issue on @elk's repo

https://github.com/elk-zone/elk/issues/653

Remember user's last viewed location in feed · Issue #653 · elk-zone/elk

This is a side effect of some other navigation/UX issues I ran into, but when getting routed to the wrong feed (or the app minimizing itself randomly) when I reopen the app it refreshes my feed, an...

@tomayac Metatext (iOS) does this. Sometimes you have to tap a button embedded in the timeline (with arrows pointing up) to load new toots (if there a many), but otherwise exactly your wished behavior.
@mrbigbunbury I liked Metatext, but was a bit skeptical since the open source project was abandoned: https://github.com/metabolist/metatext.

@tomayac Toot! (iOS) does this. Have to manually tap a button to load new toots at intervals, but it lets you choose between continuing the timeline or jumping to new stuff.
@jamesgecko I’m a bit turned down by toots like this, though: https://mastodon.social/@tootapp/102626225748701681. This is about the in-app purchase with this name.
@tomayac It does have a silly “Toot! for men” iap tucked away in the themes. Tbh it seemed pretty par for the course for Mastodon circa 2019. The application in general leans into whimsy.
@tomayac
That's Fedilab. Only for Android though :-)

#fedilab
@kallekn @apps Ah, thanks. But good to know in case I switch to Android, which I do occasionally.
@tomayac Been using Ice Cubes which allows me to do this.
@bramus I tried it in the past and didn’t like something about it that I don’t remember now. Will give it another try.
@[email protected] you tried @ivory ? It works the way you describe, in my experience
@tomayac I wish you could follow a post a get notified about replies - in absence of that: please post about what you end up using, because I'm also looking for that! :)
