Top 5 questions I’m asked as an American living in Australia:

- Are U.S. portions sizes really as big as they say? (Yes)

- Why do Americans have such straight white teeth? (Cultural norms)

- Will the U.S. will fall apart soon? (Hope not)

- Does every American have a gun? (No, but some have a lot of them)

- How do you send your kids to U.S. schools every day given mass shootings? (I really don’t know)

I should add, I’m returning to the US in a few weeks, but have immensely enjoyed living in Brisbane since last summer. It’s now my favorite city. /2
@Sheril .....says someone who hasn't lived in Sydney 😸
@Sheril Great to hear! What is it that you have enjoyed about living in Brisbane? What would make it better?
@webber I don’t drive bc everything is so accessible. The city & residents value sustainability & cultural heritage. Incredible food & a thriving arts scene. Beautiful large free parks & gardens. Excellent public transportation. Love the school our children attend. State of the art technology. Great universities. Ideal city for families. A healthcare system that works. I could really go on and on….
@Sheril @webber Went there for a week on a business week. Discovered South Bank and used to chill in the sun after meetings.
@Sheril that last one gives me such anxiety cuz we have no choice but to send them to school since we both have to work just to make ends meet...
@coachjz @Sheril The news report I saw on the shooting yesterday mentioned how well the little kids (that survived) did because of all the practice they had doing live shooter drills. Depressing.
@Sheril apparently I don’t have American teeth 😢

@Sheril How long have you been in Aus?

I migrated here in 1996, have had a couple of brief visits to the US in the late 90s. I would be terrified to go there now.

La Grrlchild now works in LA. We live in a state of suspended disbelief that she will always be OK. 😳

@Sheril When on vacation from her home in London my very English Nan used to sit at the Woolworth diner and watch Americans eat.

@Sheril every time I go someplace elsewhere in the world and get an "American" portion it's 3 times bigger than what I'd get in America, whereas the normal portions seemed...normal.

And in Germany that got upset if you wanted to take the leftovers.

I dunno. Disagree about your portion claim here.

@Sheril The US is falling apart. Advise you to stay in Australia
@Sheril Teeth in the US are part of the first-impressions triad of social class: stylish clothing, good hair, pretty teeth. I say this having just spent $5,000 on the cosmetics of my own teeth, so this is definitely a self-criticism.
