Last night, the gates of my hometown's city hall were set on fire

If you're wondering what is going on in #France, this is about a lot more than pension reform

The pension reform is unjust in & of itself (women & poor people will be the ones most impacted). But the rage French people are expressing right now is about Macron's hatred for democracy. Since his reelection just one year ago, he has bypassed parliament 11 times, more than all govs in the previous 20 years put together

UPDATE below

A friend closely involved in the (peaceful) demonstrations said the gate of the city hall was set on fire by the far-right. They are coming out in full force, incl. to attack peaceful protestors

This the largest movement we've seen in a generation--larger than 2006 when I was in high school. Ppl are saying it's on par with 1995 and still people are angrier

Police repression is ruthless: a protestor lost a finger, 100s have been injured, 100s indiscriminately arrested (incl. tourist bystanders)

@raph and that is why french people do not burn down macron's palaces, but city halls? sry, i will never understand french rationale
@testing There is no rationale. People are angry. 99.99% of people are demonstrating peacefully, and a handful are turning to attacking any symbol of the state.
@raph @ApNudd Sorry, but this view is incredibly biased. If you want to know what is going on in France, here it is :
Someone finally has the guts to signal the end of school break. It’s time to face a few realities and look around.
France is a beautiful, social-minded and healthcare-minded country.
We enjoy free excellent healthcare, free excellent education, and yes, it’s a democracy.
Macron was elected, he’s doing what’s needed.
This level of violence is not acceptable.

@raph @ApNudd He still was elected democratically.
And I do confirm : France IS a beautiful country.
All is not perfect of course, but if you look around to what’s going on in other countries, we’re pretty well treated…
@raph This is how it’s done, lazy Americans.

@raph

He has obviously been taking lessons from Johnson and the Conservative government in circumventing law, procedure, convention etc.

@raph My full retirement age in the US is 67 so I completely agree with France's peaceful protestors. And no doubt it's the far-right that does most of the damage because that's their playbook
@raph the U.K. is in a similar situation, but ppl just roll over and accept being trodden on by the establishment! We haven’t got an effective opposition!
