@jonny In 2001, I created a simple page that made a bird sub-window center itself under your mouse. The idea was "you can't close it without using keyboard controls". The JS doesn't work anymore but I really don't care to figure out why.
The code, and my ASCII art bird, is here:

nasty js

@elithebearded I think with contemporary javascript you would do that like this! https://gist.github.com/sneakers-the-rat/b00e431e011b17d69f3692196772d4a7
paper crane that doesn't let you close it

Gist

@jonny Thanks. It seems a little easier to escape now, fast mouse movements or hitting the side of the screen work. But it's the general idea.

I stuck it in the lower case version of the URL at my website:

I can credit you differently if you'd like.

flighty js

@elithebearded
dang. we'll have to write a predictive kalman filter to move the window one or two steps ahead of where the mouse is going to be then. no credit needed, it was your site :)
@jonny this one isnt prohibited by any rules, but might just be a web development war crime
@feonixrift it is just a stunningly bad idea
@jonny omg! This is a work of horrifying genius. Deranged. I love it.

@jonny can you determine the position of the window below it and then smoothly load a new page based on coordinates?

I am imagining something terrible where you fixed-width a window to excruciatingly small, and make them hunt around the blank "main page" with the cartoon-detective magnifying-glass-window

@NireBryce
so yes, and you could do this with multiple windows as well:

@jonny I see no problem with this. Better than 99% of all news sites out there.
@loke @jonny ofc you do need 12 phones to use it on mobile
@andrewt
@loke
responsive web design is hard ok
@jonny what in the name of JavaScript is this?
@jonny this is so cursed I love it

@bornach
holy shit that is a beautiful idea
@jonny I remember back in the early 00's there was a website that opened a whole bunch of UI-less popup windows in a grid similar to this. It was considered revolutionary at the time but I don't think you could even make it work now!
@andy_warb
it is possible still! you just need people to give you permission to open the popups, at least in ff. that'll be a basic part of accessing this site: do u choose the popup route or the normal website route lol
@jonny can you reach the ABOUT page? It doesn't look like the user can control the trajectory of the ball
@esdonto
yes but the user can also control the position of the windows lol ;p
@jonny ah yes, The Metaverse
@jonny hahahaha, I love this! Can't see the image but the description is awesome.
The Littlest Bad Guy

@jonny cursed website, love it
@jonny unfortunately, if you browser is modern, popups will be blocked by default. Back when I was in highschool I made a forkbomb using this because the schools sysadmin set popups to always be allowed 🤦‍♀️
@jonny is this a new hyprland app launcher?
@jonny Ok, but shouldn't the title bar shrink when the "ball" website hits the ceiling?
@infinite_loopy
the paddle? is that how this game is supposed to work?
@jonny Yes. The versions of breakout I'm familiar with cut the size of the paddle in half when the ball goes to the top of the screen. Maybe it was just an Atari thing...?
@jonny It’s a day for arkanoid-likes, @StupidMassive!
@jonny and then Ads will just be like mindsweeper bombs 😮‍💨
@raeis3d
BRILLIANT I will add some fake ads to the next one
@jonny need the site now
@cookies5219
sorryyyyy I haven't deployed it yet because I haven't set up my ci on my own server yet but here is the worst js in the world:

and some of the laziest templating of all time:

i have like a bunch of these now but i want to try to make one that's a video game lmao

jonny's computer website

@jonny

Reminds me of the times when we did things like this around 2000. I present the Institute for Optical Innovation. That only exists per it's homepages.

(oh yes, and at some point around then I also wrote pong in Javascript)

@jonny why am I just seeing this 🤩
@jonny please please please tell me this was made in 2003 and it was super fun to make back then but it doesn't work on modern browsers 😟
@zash
I regret to inform you this is a widely supported part of the JavaScript spec
