This was an actual argument made about reasons for the SVB failure in the Wall Street Journal. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/13/silicon-valley-bank-woke-right-wing/
The right offers a reason Silicon Valley Bank failed: Wokeness

A failure of a capitalist institution is transformed into a failure of American culture.

The Washington Post

@jvagle

WSJ is pure Murdoch poison, read at your own risk...

@jvagle dude said that, wrote it out + the wsj printed it. that's quite a systemic failure, right there

@jbminn @jvagle

This is systemic bigotry in a nutshell. A company run by white men holding money of companies run by men fails and the white guy blames it on everyone but the white men.

@jvagle We know the answer, 12 white men would not have avoided this mess, see every previous bank failure.
@jvagle
Presumably, the diversity police have some sort of time machine that's made it possible for them to go back in time to cause every previous back failure as well.
@jvagle and they present this as a valid analysis??? Jesus christ all rationality is thrown out the window

@jvagle

Can you call it an argument when it has no logic and no basis in reality?

@Tazor @jvagle In formal rhetoric this is called "argumentum ad ahistorical dipshit."

@kexline @jvagle

Haha! Glad I learned something new 😊

@jvagle @Popehat because also a white man can’t be LGBTQ or a veteran ???
@jvagle JFC. Talk about shitty reasons for their failure.
@jvagle They forgot the classic lead in for their 12 white men statement. I've always heard it start as "I'm not racist, but ..."
@jbeimler @jvagle Fatuous disclaimers are no longer fashionable in those circles.

@jvagle That's how it all starts. Little phrases here and there, pushing the limits of the acceptable. Until it's too late and anything goes.

@zorangrbic @jvagle

We're past that - elected Republican officials are calling for "eliminating" trans people - that's not a "little phrase."

@jvagle That's just gross. How does that even make it into print? (Oh..it's the WSJ.)

@jvagle

That's.....wow. I got nothin'.

@jvagle Those numbers suggest eleven members, of which one was Black and one was LGBTQ+?

And that's just too much diversity, huh?

@jvagle the racism, it hurts. Holy cow.
@jvagle still finding ways to blame Obama.

@jvagle They look like idiots when they say things like this. Anything that isn’t a white male Chistian is woke to them. lol.

@donieosullivan
@chrislhayes

@jvagle Woke is the new scapegoat.

@jvagle
Sad thing is that this gets echoed even in local news outlets like SF Gate because it is click bait. If you read the story, it just a headline statement with nothing behind it beyond saying it is a conservative talking point.

A simple guide to the politics of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse

Here is a quick guide to the politics of the situation surrounding Silicon Valley Bank, from deregulation to the "bailout" to purported wokeness.

Spin doctors seem to have fallen through the looking glass in the past couple of days. How could *anyone* watch the antics of Elon Musk play out over these past months, and then accept that "wokeness" must be The Big Problem with a corporate culture that spawns the likes of him?

Indieweb.Social
@jvagle @kristofor upholding the adage that you can remove everything in a sentence before a "but" or "that said" to reveal the author's true intent.
@jvagle You may also notice that, despite the fact that SVB said they purposely hired veterans, Charlie Kirk does not mention that in his bigoted rant. Curious how β€œjust asking questions” β€œconcerns” about DEI and affirmative action tend to only focus on certain groups.
@jvagle I reached my β€˜No more!’ moment with the NYT a while back. This is the WaPo’s turn. It’s a shame that the leading American news sources are bigoted AF.
@Tattered @jvagle I can’t read the Washington Post article, because it’s behind a paywall, but based on the screenshot, the racist argument was made in the Wall Street Journal and quoted (and, I hope, criticized) in the linked Washington Post piece

@jvagle @Popehat

"We need to diversify."

*hires a black, queer, female veteran*

"No, I meant our liabilities! Ah, if only there were more straight, white men here!"

@jvagle RIP Bank. Thought of a woman and died.
@jvagle If it's the editorial board, they're Fox-esque douchebags extraordinaires, and they always have been even before the Murdoch acquisition.
@jvagle "And furthermore Carthage should be destroyed" theory of rhetoric.

@jvagle

Libertarian Republicans, the party of "personal responsibility"...lol.

@jvagle That is one very large, very pervasive 'yikes' right there captain

@jvagle
Woke does not equal broke.

Being a little sh*t and posting this on an already rightwing-corrupted news site makes you dedicated to being that little s*it.

@jvagle I always do a special facepalm when a Kessler shows up in the worst manner.

@jvagle
Diverse teams tend to yield more success, so to say it was the cause of failure would be a cock and bull shaggy-dog story.
@jvagle "Just asking questions "

@jvagle Does acting upon that belief violate civil rights laws? What about..just the act of expressing that belief? Would that be considered...idk, gray-area hate speech?

As if companies with a priority to be inclusive and more representative of their country and customers can not multitask and focus on several areas of company need, including safety and conscious teambuilding.

We are in alot worse trouble as a country if CEOs can't walk and chew gum while taking home 7-figure pay.

@jvagle the core argument is that they might not have had the absolute best people they could get because they wanted to fill some kind of quota. No mention if they did in fact hire to quota or they just didn't exclude people who arent cishet white men like most banks.

Of course there is no indication that anyone else in those roles wo uld have done anything different at all.

@jvagle majority white men and it’s somehow everyone else’s fault
@jvagle that anyone takes the Wall Street journal opinion section seriously is a joke.
@jvagle jebus fracking crust. ... I unsubscribed year's ago but .... It's reads like something Earl Butz would of said
@jvagle "I'm not saying 12 white men would have avoided this mess, just that their total failure would have been more homogenous."

@jvagle

Republicans are using their media appearances to promote anti-ESG malign influence campaigns on behalf of their donors within the fossil fuel industry.

Everything gets blamed on "woke" culture war nonsense or ESG.

Republicans do nothing but donor maintenance for oil oligarchs & their financiers. These folks are prepared to fry the planet.

Business backlash pushing GOP to weaken anti-ESG proposals

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) β€” Conservative Republicans who want to thwart socially and environmentally conscious investing are now being pushed to water down their proposals after backlash from powerful business groups and fears that state pension systems could see huge losses.
