extremely fun to hear people talking about how people are using USDC to store value today of all days
weird how the x axis on the chart cuts off in Q2 2022, probably nothing
"this chart was pulled yesterday and it's already a little outdated but... uh, the principle remains"
"stablecoins are always, uh, notionally, pegged to the dollar"
where can i get these slides for my next powerpoint party
god help us all
the "crypto is great because of its possibilities for financial surveillance and control" people arguably scare me the most
i've come to realize that "programmable money" is code for "i'm about to say the most dystopian shit you've ever heard"
this slide is supposed to be describing traditional finance

@molly0xfff "No single account of the state of all the ledgers"

Should uh... should anyone tell them they just described a distributed system?

@molly0xfff i bet a lot of Wikipedia research went into that
@woolfhound @molly0xfff this is a key point I think. The barrier to speak at a crypto conference is so low compared to speaking at, say, a central banking conference. No work experience required - just be vocal online. And once you've spoken at conferences you're now an expert, even if your talk is cribbed from Wikipedia
@molly0xfff
Compliance with existing law is always a drag on profitability 🙄
@molly0xfff banks should call check fees “gas”

@molly0xfff I may be biased, being a regulator, but whenever I hear someone use the excuse "compliance is too expensive" I tend to assume that they are...maybe not a criminal...

But regulatory law does not accept Hanlon's Razor as a legitimate excuse, so yeah, "negligently criminal-adjacent" is hardly a good look.

@molly0xfff I'd love to see annual compliance costs vs just the cost of the mango hack on its own
@molly0xfff in the DeFi future you too can be an overwhelmed compliance officer!
@molly0xfff how do you manage to force yourself to sit through one of these presentations? thank you for your sevice
@romunov the shitposting is a coping mechanism
@molly0xfff That there is authentic frontier gibberish.
@molly0xfff Jebus! Not even a hint of self-awareness or irony. Idiots.
@molly0xfff
"Fits mostly within existing regulatory framework" should have a couple of asterisks after it 🤣
@molly0xfff are you the only woman in the room at these events?
@molly0xfff So many solutions in search of problems.

@molly0xfff

Holy Jumping Jehosephat...😶

@molly0xfff Is their plan literally "we'll check for fraud at the borders, so surely no fraud can happen inside"?
@molly0xfff (I mean unless it's just "we'll say lots of words about KYC and maybe people won't think too hard", which is honestly a lot more likely.)
@molly0xfff when someone says "programmable money," I hear "buggy, insecure money."

@molly0xfff

How did crypto go from “permissionless, censorship resistant money” to “we can encode the permissioning and censorship into the money!” in < 15 years?

@molly0xfff And this isn't China, you say?
@molly0xfff okay maybe I am dumb but what is KYC
@loktai "know your customer". basically requiring customers to provide identification
@molly0xfff crypto pump and dumpers fail to recognize that, when accepted and implemented, blockchain will be the most effective tool for Big Brother, as all currency transactions can be traced and tracked and verified.
@molly0xfff
The gobbldygook about zero knowledge KYC is just astonishing.
@ncweaver so much of the talk around zero knowledge is... well, zero knowledge
@molly0xfff
I'd actually say negative knowledge, you get stupider the longer you listen to them...
@molly0xfff I think it's really hard to pick a favorite... most of them scare me the most.
@molly0xfff the best thing you can say about it is that, like all blockchain nonsense, it probably wouldn’t work.
@molly0xfff
Hey, at least they're the honest ones.
@molly0xfff
"me and my fellow cypherpunks are gonna get Coinbase Roth IRAs"
@molly0xfff Did they keep a straight face while saying it?
@molly0xfff > *kermit arms / flailing into walls and the ceiling / bulging eyes / screaming bloody murder / literally on fire*
@molly0xfff upgrade in what sense? Is this a sxsw? Glad i am not downtown
@molly0xfff to be fair, you’re in Texas and they know something about failing grids!
@molly0xfff @Lazarou this would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic.
@kroltanz @molly0xfff it's like they feel they have to say it even though it's clearly not true 🤷‍♂️
@molly0xfff Where the hell is that tripe from?
Sphere

Crypto is complicated, insecure and hard but it doesn’t have to be.

@molly0xfff Y2K and covid on the same slide and described as simultaneous issues is pretty cursed.

@molly0xfff Isn't that left photo Admiral Grace Hopper? Yup, thats her at the console of UNIVAC.

What the hell presentation are you at? Don't sign any paperwork otherwise you'll own a timeshare in Cabo. Don't take the mystery box, take the boat.

@tezoatlipoca "Web3 and the Future of Emerging Markets"
@molly0xfff So.. "Whats New In Grift and Criming"?
@molly0xfff Somebody's slacker older sibling made a shit-ton of money in "finance" 20 years ago because they learned COBOL, and we're still pissed about it.

@molly0xfff are they really suggesting we build something on COBOL in the year of our lord 2023.

The venn diagram of engineers that know COBOL and know blockchain are two entirely separate circles

@CompactPrism no, they're trying to dunk on the traditional banking system. i think the last three bullet points are supposed to be sarcastic but the talk honestly was not any clearer than the slide
