Junior doctors in the UK strike this week. They’re asking for 26% #PayRestoration That does sound like a lot but let’s look at why…
1st people to see you when you’re admitted
Take a history & examine you
Decide what investigations are needed
Undertake some of those investigations themselves
Use their training & the results to work out what is probably wrong with you
Prescribe all your medications
Initiate your treatment and take responsibility for these decisions!
It takes 5 years to train (minimum) and costs over £60,000 - most new doctors have £80,000 to £90, 000 debt when they start work.
They have to pay for all their professional exams & the courses needed to pass them
They have to pay their open GMC fees, college fees, portfolio fees and their own medical indemnity - non of these are covered by their employer
They have to move hospitals every 4-6 months sometimes hours away from home & family
For all this their starting salary is £14 an hour!!!
@Hypnotic In the USA?
@russellt nope UK
@Hypnotic Not in Scotland.
@russellt not yet… their T&C’s are broadly similar to those in England and the Scottish ballot for junior doctor stokes is planned for the end of March. They are also asking for full pay restoration, which they should absolutely get. #bma #juniordoctors #JuniorDoctorStrikes #PayRestoration
@Hypnotic But there isn't the debt problem in Scotland for medical students, which is one good thing.
