People who never really used Twitter don't understand what a thick skin some of us developed because of it.

But they also tend to think they're inherently superior for not having used Twitter when in many cases, they're just as bad as your average bottom of the barrel Twitter reply guy troll weirdo.

They've just never faced any serious pushback for it, the way they would if they had been on Twitter. So they never learned to shut the fuck up.

And that's been a major irony in using Mastodon.

Like, I saw a guy on here the other day who unironically asserted a right to harass people who post publicly on Mastodon and who was utterly, implacably opposed to the idea of controlling who can reply to your posts because it would deny him his "free speech" right to be an asshole to you.

And like, that guy. That guy right there. The world is full of those guys whether they're on Twitter or not.

Mastodon culture of old seems to have encouraged trolls, sea lions, and reply guys by advocating people go private or otherwise just tolerate them being assholes, driving a lot of conversation underground or behind server blocks for the sake of community level "peace and quiet."

Whereas on Twitter, at least before the Great Ensuckening, they would have been dragged to kingdom come and even eventually banned for messing with certain people.

So you know, you win some, you lose some. Que sera, sera.

I generally have far better engagement experiences here on Mastodon than I did on Twitter, but the ratio of reply guys and other trolls is higher, too.

But because I learned from Twitter, I am more than prepared to block a user or an entire instance on sight or to tell somebody to STFU because they're a fucking moron.

I don't do nice with assholes.

And honestly, I'm still resentful of certain people who want you to put everything behind a CW, even the daily news and politics, just so their personal calm is never disrupted.

And like, just block me then? If you want to live in a fantasy world where nothing is wrong. Because shit sucks, guys.

Like, I understand if your mental health is at stake. Do what you gotta do. But this is how I cope to some extent, personally. Because for real, shit sucks.

And I've personally had it up to here with people privileged enough to not only ignore what's going on but who demand other people make them feel better about it. Like, no.

At least the trolls are honest about being assholes.

@gwynnion a now former friend told me on at least 2 occasions that she “wasn’t really into politics.” Also that the reason she and her DH broke off their friendship with their “besties” was that besties were too political. So I wasn’t the least bit surprised to find myself ghosted.

Privilege and willful ignorance isn’t an attractive trait, so losing that friendship was not much of a disappointment.

@zoomydu @gwynnion I've lost count of the number of people who "un-friended" me on FB since 2012, when I took up an "It's my wall & I'll say what I want to" policy.
@zoomydu @gwynnion But I know what the block function is for and have had no hesitation in using it as often as needed to get rid of trolls going all the way back to AOL chat rooms in 1999.
@zoomydu @gwynnion
I will now grab my cane and brandish it at the neighborhood kids while exhorting them to get offa my lawn! (LOL)
@gwynnion some people want to use social media -- especially self hosted social media -- as a way to distract oneself from the suckiness of life. I personally don't care too much either way, but I understand the appeal of wanting to CW politics/news.

@thatonecalculator @gwynnion I think the insistence in various #UI implementations to call it #ContentWarnings instead of title/subject just makes things worse because it adds an entirely unnecessary layer of complexity to using them or not & a bunch of crappy UI/UX interactions.

And the thing is, at the #ActivityPub level, that layer isn't there. That field is a "name" (basically title) field in the object.

@lispi314 @gwynnion only Mastodon calls them "Content Warnings" though. Pleroma/Akkoma calls it "Subject" and Calckey/Misskey/Foundkey calls it "Comments"

@thatonecalculator @gwynnion Well hey, points for both Pleroma/Akkoma & *Key getting it right.

They also got #C2S support right, unlike #Mastodon (which intentionally fails to implement it).

@lispi314 @gwynnion ...currently none of those softwares implement the C2S API 😅

@thatonecalculator @gwynnion Well. Looks like I misread the table: https://activitypub.rocks/implementation-report/

That's... unfortunate and somewhat embarrassing.

ActivityPub Rocks!

@lispi314 @gwynnion for C2S to work properly, both the top two rows need to be "Yes". And *Key isn't even on that table.

@thatonecalculator @gwynnion Right on both account, I messed up on that much.

Makes me wonder a bit why the support is split but oh well.

@lispi314 @gwynnion no worries, we all make mistakes :)

On that note, C2S is still experimental and kinda is unfinished, so I wouldn't place it as a top priority for any Fediverse software.
@thatonecalculator I'm kind of eagerly waiting on it so I can start implementing programs that won't need to special-case for whatever the backend just happens to be running.
@lispi314
@gwynnion most things implement the Mastodon API, (Mastodon, Pleroma, Akkoma, Calckey (not Mk or Fk)), and frankly it's better suited for microblogging. C2S is meant to be more general.

@thatonecalculator Well, I can attest that there are enough differences between their implementations of that API for special-casing to be necessary.

As for C2S indeed, I'd really like to be able to setup smart clients & user-agents rather than just thin-clients. Without having to resort to all sorts of yucky & brittle abuses of the implementations.

@gwynnion
Eartha should be behind a CW...cat warning. She's got an evil streak in her a mile wide.
@darthstar She's adorable, though! 💜
@gwynnion
She has her moment.
@darthstar @gwynnion Now that she has been introduced, we not only demand more pictures, but will also forever refuse to believe anything bad you say about her. Slander, all of it! 😏😻

@sindarina @gwynnion

She's not easy. Milo, on the floor, is afraid to come in if she's hovering over the dog door.

Merle, the cattle dog, she's known since he was eight weeks old and they have a better relationship.

@gwynnion Unless they're the direct target of said policies I completely ignore them. I'm tired of being tone policed
@gwynnion It's especially annoying reading a whole CWed thread. Use those filters, people. That's what they're for!

@gwynnion

I don't have a problem with CWs, as you can remove them on all posts in your own preferences, and really it's no big deal to be considerate of others.

I spent years on twitter, and saw the worst of it, (directed at me sometimes), as well as the good.

People got used to shitting on others, without a thought, and it was pretty awful to be the butt of that.

I don't ignore what is going on, but I have to turn off the firehose of crap sometimes, blocking or muting people is no problem for me though, I like the mute function on Mastodon, it allows a time limit, which is good.

Every platform has it's good and bad points. Personally I can't do FB , the whole thing gives me the irrits, from the awful interface, to it being another corporate data stealer.

But hey, some people, a lot of people, love it.

@gwynnion @breadandcircuses “Comfort the disturbed, disturb the comfortable.”
@gwynnion This is just a personal thing, but... I don't want a CW necessary, but rather hashtags. I have 2 Mastodon accounts that I keep totally separate - one for general nonsense, cars, etc (this one) and another that I reserve for news, politics, and similar stuff. It's 100% for mental health, but I don't want to read politics when looking at pics of cool cars and dogs. Doesn't mean I'm avoiding it all the time, but for me, I have to be in the mood for it already - otherwise I just rage.
@gwynnion Things like politics definitely should be CW’d but day to day news? Come on now. People have been getting too soft, not to be one of those people, because they want the world to cater to them.
