@adamconover @pluralistic I feel like some are here in Mastodon cars saying "alright get in the car" and then complaining that not everyone is in the car that used to drive like Twitter.
I've been in my new car for a while now and realized that...I kinda missed the silence of pre-algorithm social media and it's actually kinda nice to not have to engage at every single moment of the day. I don't need a large following or to have a continuous feed to be happy.
I even have been...going outside. It's weird.
Same here, watching on youtube rn and I looked for his account *as soon as* he mentioned it
@adamconover Nice to hear @pluralistic mention @tomjennings in passing!
Though that tale explored in depth (particularly with mention of Gary Kildall and Digital Research which weren't mentioned) could probably be an episode in and of itself.
The IBMPC was definitely not designed to be commodity hardware, and it wasn't thanks to M$/Bill Gates nor Paul Allen things ended up the way they did.
This leads me to think, while @gruber is right in criticizing the free server model and volunteerism in Mastodon, the Medium's server in long run might not be more sustainable.
Company incentives aren't towards interoperability in long run, https://youtu.be/5txRrCrfTyY?t=1321 (22:01 onwards) tech has a history of capturing decentralized system and centralizing it.
IMO solution could be to have paid server, but have a non-profit like Mastodon gGmbH run it.
@adamconover @pluralistic @gruber
If more #YouTubers ever come to #Mastodon, they need to think about which server they want their audience to be?
Followers are capital in Mastodon too, like on YouTube and Twitter. If they let their audience coalesce to for-profit Mastodon servers outside their control, they don't gain a lot.
However, if there are sustainable non-profit servers, the big creators can point their audience to make accounts there, and those act as a kind of demilitarized zone.
