@f00fc7c8
I'm trying to convince my dad that my stepsisters need an *actual* computer instead of tablets for this very reason.
Either learn how it works and wield it or it's gonna wield you.
IDK tho maybe disengagement is a better overall strategy for tech, and I'm the one whose screwed.
It's nice to know how tech works, but I spend 12+ a day staring at a screen and it's a little distressing sometimes.
@alkaid i'm in a similar boat. though at least everyone in my family has an actual computer.
i have never understood the kids who learn tablets or chromebooks exclusively, and never use any real PCs
i understand tablets as a first experience but at some point, everyone who wants to engage with tech should use a PC
It's super scary!
Tablets and smartphones are such curated experiences that it's basically magic. Walled gardens and stuff.
Sisters came over to play Minecraft and eat dinner and I had to show em how to plug in the monitor and turn it on.
It's strange to imagine being young and not knowing how computers work.
@f00fc7c8 @LillyHerself Unless Thinkpad’s support phone calls, I think this is missing the point possibly… Which is not to say that I don’t agree with the general premise as it applies to, say, an iPad vs a ThinkPad.
But if you are actually giving them a phone for emergency calls and such, the iPhone is quite likely going to be more secure than an Android one of that vintage too.
@heavyboots @f00fc7c8 @LillyHerself This is where I really hate how 2G and 3G are being phased out. Tons of fantastic dumb phones that'll only make calls, and last until the end of time. All being made obsolete now :(
I suppose you could go even more oldschool, and get a long range two way radio.
In any case, thanks the the afore mentioned 2g/3g shutdown, any smartphone new enough to support volte is still too "smart" imo
